Corn🌽🌽🌽 (Zea mays), often known as Indian corn or maize, is a grass family (Poaceae) cereal plant that produces a grain that is edible. It is one of the most extensively dispersed food crops on the planet, having originated in America. Corn is utilized in cattle feed, human food, biofuel, and industry as a raw resource.

HISTORY
Corn 🌽🌽was domesticated for the first time 10,000 years ago by local peoples in southern Mexico. The Balsas teosinte (Zea mays parviglumis), a wild grass, is said to have been the source of modern maize. Native Americans taught European colonists how to grow indigenous grains, and their civilization had expanded as far north as southern Maine by the time of European arrival of North America. Corn has expanded to all areas of the world suitable for agriculture since its introduction into Europe by Christopher Columbus and other explorers and colonizers. Corn is farmed all across the world, from 58° N latitude in Canada and Russia to 40° S latitude in South America, with a harvest maturing practically every month of the year. It is the most important crop in the U.S and is a constant meal in many places.

DESCRIPTION
The corn 🌽🌽plant is a tall, erect annual grass with a robust stem. The big, narrow leaves are placed alternately on each sides of the stem and have wavy borders. The pistillate (female) inflorescences, which mature into edible ears, are spikes with a lengthened axis carrying paired spikelets in longitudinal rows; each row of paired spikelets produces two rows of grain. Yellow and white corn varieties are the most popular for eating, but there are also varieties with red, blue, pink, and black kernels, which are sometimes banded, spotted, or striped. Each ear is surrounded by shucks or husks, which are modified leaves.

CORN TYPES🌽🌽🌽
Dent corn, flint corn, flour corn, sweet corn, and popcorn are commercial classifications based mostly on kernel texture. Dent corn is characterized by a depression in the crown of the kernel caused by unequal drying of the hard and soft starch that make up the kernel. It is primarily grown for animal feed and food manufacturing. Flint corn has no depression and contains little soft starch; it is used for ornamentation and eaten as hominy in the Americas. Flour corn has soft, mealy, readily ground kernels and is a major source of corn flour due to its high content of soft starch. Sweet corn contains wrinkled transparent seeds that are widely marketed fresh, frozen, or canned as a vegetable; unlike other forms of corn, the plant sugar is not converted to starch.
Popcorn, a hard-shelled variety of flint corn with small hard kernels, lacks soft starch, and heating causes the moisture in the cells to expand, causing the kernels to pop. Hybridization, which is based on crossbreeding of superior inbred lines, has resulted in improvements in corn.

PRODUCTS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS
Corn🌽🌽 is one of the most prolific and widely planted crops on the planet. It is widely farmed as a source of food for humans and livestock, as well as a biofuel and a raw material in industry.

NUTRITION AND FOOD
Corn is the world's third-largest plant-based food source. Despite its importance as a staple food in many regions of the world, corn is nutritionally inferior to other cereals. It has low-quality protein and is lacking in niacin. Pellagra is often caused by diets that are high in it (niacin-deficiency disease). Corn has a lot of dietary fiber and antioxidants.

Corn flour🍚🍚,unlike many other cereal grains, is gluten-free and cannot be used to make rising breads on its own. Masa, a type of dough used in staple meals such as tortillas, arepas, and tamales, is widely utilized in Latin American cuisine. Sweet corn is boiled or roasted on the cob in the United States and many other countries, then creamed, transformed into hominy (hulled kernels) or meal, and used in corn puddings, cornbread, mush, and scrapple. It's also utilized in popcorn, confections, and a variety of prepared morning cereals.
Corn oil is generally utilized in food because of its bland flavor and pale colour. Because it is low in cholesterol, it is used as a salad and cooking oil. Hydrogenation, a process in which the oil is mixed with hydrogen at high temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst, can turn corn oil into margarine.
Corn has other numerous uses aside those mentioned in this post ,please do read about them at your own time.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF CORN🌽🌽
Don't be fooled by the sweet flavor. Choosing maize and whole-grain corn products over processed white flour-based foods will help improve gut health and reduce your risk of diseases including cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

Corn's fiber🌽🌽 helps you feel fuller for longer between meals. It also feeds good bacteria in your gut, which may help prevent you from colon cancer.

Diverticulitis, a disorder that develops pouches in the walls of your colon, may be prevented by eating popcorn. Men who ate more popcorn had a lower risk of developing diverticular illness, according to a big study.

Corn has high amount of vitamin C, an antioxidant that protects our cells from damage and helps to prevent diseases such as cancer.

Yellow maize are high in lutein and zeaxanthin, which are good for eye health and can help prevent cataracts by preventing lens damage. Vitamins B, E, and K, as well as minerals like magnesium and potassium, are found in low amounts in corn.

Colour is important when it comes to nutrients. Natural molecules called phyto nutrients, which carry antioxidants, are found in plant pigments. As a result, white and yellow corn have fewer antioxidants than blue and purple corn. (These darker-colored maize varieties are available in chips or taco shells.)

SIDE EFFECTS
Corn🌽🌽, like potatoes and peas, is a starchy vegetable. That means it contains sugar and carbs, both of which can cause blood sugar levels to rise. If you don't overdo it, it can still be a healthy element of your diet. If you have diabetes, you don't have to eliminate maize entirely, but you should manage your portion sizes.

Corn🌽🌽 also contains antinutrients, which are chemicals that prevent your body from properly absorbing nutrients. Many of them can be removed just by soaking.

Corn is frequently tainted by fungus that produce toxins known as mycotoxins. You're more likely to have some malignancies, liver difficulties, lung problems, and a slowed immune system if you eat a lot of corn containing these chemicals.

CORN PREPARATION AND STORAGE
Corn🌽🌽 on the cob can be boiled, steamed, roasted, or grilled. For roasting and grilling, it is best to leave the husk on. Microwave the corn for around 2 minutes per ear for speedier cooking. This vegetable can also be used to add flavor to soups, stews, and casseroles.

Take caution when topping your corn. If you butter the ear, you'll add calories and fat. Instead, add flavor with a squeeze of lime, a teaspoon of olive oil, or a pinch of chile powder or smoked paprika. The same seasonings can also be used to substitute butter in popcorn.

Frozen and canned corn are good substitutes for fresh corn when you're short on time. To be sure, look at the nutrition label.

CONCLUSION

The corn 🌽🌽or maize as you might want to call it is a very widely eaten grain ,it is as well delicious and nutritious ,but it also has its down sides. So when next you intend to eat that maize in excess do consider its down sides too,but in moderation you can enjoy your corn meal with full confidence.
