Porcelain Museum. The "white gold", as porcelain is also called, is the subject of this part of the series about museums and collections in Vienna that are worth seeing. In the museum of the renowned Augarten Porcelain Manufactory you can learn interesting facts about the history of porcelain and enjoy original unique pieces from 300 years of Viennese porcelain history.

Im Museum der renommierten Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten erfährt man Wissenswertes rund um die Geschichte des Porzellans und kann sich an originalen Unikaten aus 300 Jahren Wiener Porzellangeschichte erfreuen.
Porcelain is an invention of the Asian High Culture. In Europe the term "porcelain" first appeared in a travelogue (The Travels of Marco Polo) by the Venetian merchant and adventurer Marco Polo (ca. 1254-1324. He is said to have been one of the first to bring Chinese porcelain to Europe.
Porzellan ist eine Erfindung der asiatischen Hochkultur. In Europa tauchte der Begriff "Porzellan" zum ersten Mal in einem Reisebericht (Il Milione) des venezianischen Kaufmanns und Abenteurers Marco Polo (ca. 1254–1324) auf. Er soll als einer der Ersten chinesisches Porzellan nach Europa gebracht haben.
The success story of European porcelain began in the German city of Meißen with the alchemist and chemist Johann Friedrich Böttger. At the beginning of 1708 he and his collaborators succeeded in producing real hard porcelain. In 1710 the first European porcelain production facility was built in Meißen. Tableware, sculptures and objects from Meißen's porcelain artists have always been sought after and enjoy a worldwide reputation.
Mit dem Alchemisten und Chemiker Johann Friedrich Böttger begann in der deutschen Stadt Meißen die Erfolgsgeschichte des europäischen Porzellans. Anfang 1708 gelang es ihm und seinen Mitstreitern echtes Hartporzellan herzustellen. 1710 wurde in Meißen die erste europäische Porzellanproduktionsstätte errichtet. Tafelgeschirr, Plastiken und Objekte aus der Hand der Meißener Porzellankünstler sind seit jeher begehrt und genießen Weltruf.
The second European porcelain manufactory was founded in Vienna in 1718. After an eventful history, the factory had to be closed in 1864. Despite first-class quality, the company could not prevail against the cheap mass production from Bohemia.
Die zweite europäische Porzellanmanufaktur entstand 1718 in Wien. Nach einer wechselvollen Geschichte musste die Fabrik 1864 ihre Pforten schließen. Trotz erstklassiger Qualität konnte das Unternehmen sich nicht gegen die billige Massenproduktion aus Böhmen durchsetzen.
The Augarten Porcelain Manufactory, which was founded in 1923, continues the Viennese porcelain tradition. The production facility is located in the historic Augarten Palace in the oldest baroque park in the city. A side wing of the building houses the Porcelain Museum.
Die Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten, die 1923 gegründet wurde, setzt die Wiener Porzellan-Tradition fort. Die Produktionsstätte befindet sich im historischen Schloss Augarten im ältesten barocken Park der Stadt. In einem Seitentrakt des Gebäudes ist das Porzellanmuseum untergebracht.
Using original exhibits from 300 years, the history of Viennese porcelain is illustrated on two floors.
Auf zwei Etagen wird anhand von originalen Exponaten aus 300 Jahren die Geschichte des Wiener Porzellans illustriert.
Eye-catcher and heart of the exhibition is the original two-storey circular kiln from 1923, which was first fired with wood and later with coal. On the ground storey the glost firing was carried out at a temperature of 2516° F, the biscuit firing was carried out at 1706° F on the upper storey.
Blickfang und Herzstück der Ausstellung ist der zweigeschossige originale Rundofen aus dem Jahr 1923, der zunächst mit Holz, später mit Kohle befeuert wurde. Im Erdgeschoss erfolgte der Glattbrand bei einer Temperatur von 1380° C, der Schrühbrand wurde bei 930° C im Obergeschoss durchgeführt.
Genuine porcelain requires 50% of the white clay kaolin, 25% quartz and 25% feldspar for its production.
Echtes Porzellan benötigt für die Herstellung 50% der weißen Tonerde Kaolin, 25% Quarz und 25% Feldspat.
The ingredients are mixed, slurred with water and stirred. After months of storage, the mass is poured using plaster molds or freely modeled. The blanks are air-dried and then placed in the kiln where, after the biscuit firing which lasts several hours, the so-called "shards" are produced.
Die Bestandteile werden vermischt, mit Wasser geschlämmt und gerührt. Nach einer monatelangen Lagerung wird die Masse mit Hilfe von Gipsformen gegossen oder frei modelliert. Anschließend werden die Rohlinge an der Luft getrocknet und dann in den Brennofen gesetzt, wo daraus nach dem mehrere Stunden dauernden Schrühbrand der sogenannte "Scherben" entsteht.
After the glaze, the glost firing is carried out at high heat. During this process, the individual components of the body fuse together and the real porcelain with a high density is created. Then the colors are applied with a pen or brush and melted onto the glaze during a new firing.
Nach der Glasur erfolgt der Glattbrand bei hoher Hitze. Dabei verschmelzen die einzelnen Bestandteile des Scherbens und das echte Porzellan mit einer hohen Dichte entsteht. Anschließend werden mit Feder oder Pinsel die Farben aufgetragen und bei einem neuerlichen Brand auf die Glasur geschmolzen.
This object is a so-called 'trompe-l'œil'. The croissant and melange of porcelain seem deceptively real.
Bei diesem Objekt handelt es sich um ein sogenanntes "Trompe-l’œil". Täuschend echt wirken Kipferl und Melange aus Porzellan.

Ah, sehr schön - bei dieser Hitze habe ich so richtig Lust, den späten Nachmittag in einem hohen, kühlen Altbau zu verbringen und mich mit Wissen und tollen Fotos à la Anna vom Schmelzen ablenken zu lassen. Nee, die stellen den Rundofen doch nur aus, ohne ihn anzuheizen... ;-)
Das ist wirklich interessant. Wien und Porzellan habe ich zwar im Zusammenhang auf dem Schirm, aber die zweitgrößte Industrie Europas im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert überrascht mich nun doch ein wenig.
Ich mag das filigrane chinesische Porzellan sehr und bin von der Malereikunst auf dem weißen Gold oft fasziniert. Figürliches wie Kipferl und Melange (zwei Fremdwörter direkt hintereinander...) ist mir definitiv zu kitschig, kann dabei aber durchaus den künstlerischen Aspekt bei diesem interessanten Handwerk wertschätzen.
Puh, ich schau mich nochmal kurz in Japan um, obwohl es da auch so heiß sein soll...

Sorry, ich habe leider vergessen eine Übersetzung für alle Nicht-Wiener mitzuliefern ;-) Kipferln sind bei euch vermutlich als Hörnchen bekannt und eine Melange ist ein Mischgetränk aus Kaffee und Milch zu gleichen Teilen.
Diese naturalistischen Schauspeisen erfreuten sich im 19. Jahrhundert großer Beliebtheit. Ich würde mir ein solches "Scherzobjekt" allerdings auch nicht in die Vitrine stellen.
Bei uns ziehen gerade erste Gewitterwolken auf, die ersehnte Abkühlung naht ..., hoffentlich auch bei euch.

For me the process of making porcelain was very interesting and of course to see all the beautiful porcelain from several centuries. Unfortunately the light conditions in the museum were not ideal for taking pictures.
