What is your dream job or business, and why is it your dream?

We all dreamt of what kind of job we would do when we grew up since childhood. Back in the day, when we were in school, if someone asked us what we wanted to be in the future, everyone would say that we would grow up to be a doctor, a engineer, a teacher, or a lawyer. These are the jobs that everyone dreamed of since childhood. The main reason for that is that our parents and the people around us accept that becoming a doctor or an engineer is the greatest achievement their children can achieve. So, it has been ingrained in our minds since childhood. I also wanted to be a doctor when I was little. But later, my decision changed.

Now my dream is to become a registered pharmacist in our country. I also hope to open my own pharmacy and start my own new business. I did not know about the profession of pharmacist when I was child. Since I was child, I had been dreaming of becoming a doctor, so I did not know about any other job. But later I came to know about this profession of pharmacist. Since then, I wanted to become a pharmacist. Because pharmacist is a very noble and honorable job like a doctor.

A doctor also prescribes medicine to patients. The pharmacist, after carefully monitoring that prescriptions, dispenses the medicines to the patient with good advice about it.

What skills or qualifications would you need to achieve it?

As for the educational qualifications and skills required to become a pharmacist in our country,

• Firstly, the student must have successfully passed the Advanced Level with Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in the Science stream.

• He or she must be of good character and free from medical conditions such as mania.

• By enrolling in a recognized Diploma in Pharmacy of not less than 3 years conducted by the University of Colombo and the State Pharmaceutical Corporation.

• Having completed the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.pharm) degree from a recognized university in Sri Lanka or abroad and having fulfilled the professional qualifications.

• Alternatively, one should pass the above-mentioned science subjects and register as a trained pharmacist with the Sri Lanka Medical Council. Then complete a full-time training period in a pharmacy under a master pharmacist for two years, and obtain the Proficiency in Pharmacy Certificate issued by the Ceylon Medical College Council, after passed the External Pharmacist Examination.

How would your dream job or business positively impact your life or others?

A pharmacist is a job that requires a lot of responsibility and a good conscience. People respect a pharmacist a lot, just like a doctor. So a pharmacist can use his knowledge to do a good service to the society. To give good advice and instructions to the patients who come to him about the use of medicines.

Today, many people are used to taking medicine at unnecessary. So people are used to taking medicine as they wish because they are not well aware of it. So a pharmacist can educate the people about this and stop taking medicine without the approval of a doctor.

What steps are you currently taking (or planning to take) to make your dream a reality?

I have already started working towards making my dream come true. I have passed the basic qualification required to become a pharmacist, including Advanced Level Chemistry and the other two subjects in the bio stream. I was also registered as a practicing pharmacist with the Sri Lanka Medical Council a few years ago. I have also completed the two-year training period provided by the Medical Council.

Now I have to face the external pharmacist examination conducted by the Ceylon Medical College Council and pass it. After passing the External Pharmacist Exam, I will be a registered pharmacist in our country. After that, I will get a license to open a pharmacy, which I hope to do. Also, if necessary, I can get a bank loan for it and open a pharmacy. I am thinking of doing it that way.

Ooh wow... What a coincidence!!! I think we both have same visions as I'm also dreaming to be a pharmacist in near future 😁. I'm also in the last year of my course of a pharmacist of category B. After that, I will be able to open my own medical store or pharmacy. But here I think it is a difference between our studies as you are doing pharm B which is consists of four years but mine is two years only is it true? By the way, I'm glad to hear about your enthusiasm regarding your dream business of pharmacy. I wish you very good luck 🤞

It is really a pleasure to hear this. 😊 So my warmest wishes to the future pharmacist 💐 You are right, in our country, we have to study for almost 4 years to get a B.pharm degree. Then is it possible to get a B.pharm degree in your country in about two years..? Even if we are a B.pharm degree holder in our country, we cannot open a pharmacy with that degree. For that, we must definitely pass the External Pharmacist Examination. After passing that exam, we get a pharmacy license.

That is how we can open our own pharmacy. And a B.pharm degree holder can work as a government pharmacist. But they do not get a license to open a pharmacy. As I mentioned, no one can easily pass this External Pharmacist Examination. It is a very difficult exam. Only a small number of people, like 10%, pass that exam every year. In fact, if I had money, I would come to India or Pakistan and do B.pharm. What are the qualifications required to do B.pharm in your country..?

Well, in my country Pakistan, the course of pharmacy is categorized into two categories:

  • B Pharm (2 Years)
  • D Pharm (5 Years)

In them, the people with B Pharm degree are free to open their own medical store where they can only sale the prescribed and over the counter medicine. Also, they can work under a qualified pharmacist (D Pharm degree holder) in any of public or private sectors.

But the study of D Pharm is quite difficult as it is similar to the MBBs studies with a difference of only one book (Surgery). The people with Pharm D can open their own pharmacy, work in pharmaceutical companies and in the places where the drugs are prepared. Furthermore, they can be selected as a drug inspector after passing a special exam and get a 18th scale job.

I hope it will be helpful for you ☺️

Thank you very much for your informations. After you finish B.pharm, start doing D.pharm. It really helps you gain a lot of knowledge and experiences. There is no waste in learning things in this pharmacy field. All the best dear 💕💕

Hi @nishadi89 , Being a doctor is a noble job, including being a pharmacist. People who act as pharmacists have a soul that enjoys helping other people who have health problems and need medicines, not just for business.

Pharmacist specialists have many other important roles, being a place/consultant for consultation and education that helps provide information about how to maintain health and even how to live a healthy life. I hope your great dreams as a pharmacist are fulfilled.

what an interesting narrative post, thank you for sharing with us.

In fact, every job is equally valuable. But those who work in the health sector should do it with great care and caution, because it is a field of work that directly affects someone's life. Thanks for your valuable comment 💕
