Introduction

People,in the past often linked this disease to a curse or punishment from God to any disobedient person. But, it's just a normal illness that can affect anyone at anytime. The misunderstanding has led to the stigmatization of people affected with this disease. Regardless, every last Sunday of January is often celebrated as "world leprosy day". And for the year 2024, it falls on the 28th of January. This had helped to refuse the level of stigmatization against people with this health challenge.

What I Know About Leprosy

Leprosy is a chronic disease that is caused by a bacteria known as Mycobacterium leprae. Another name for this disease is Hansen's disease. This infection is visible on the skin of persons who are affected with it. It also affects the eyes, peripheral nerves and respiratory track. Leprosy can be transmitted through prolonged contact with an affected person and through respiratory droplets.

If not treated early, it can cause permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs, eyes, etc.

Does Leprosy Have A Cure?

Yes, leprosy has a cure.
It is curable with multi-drug therapy. This multi-drug therapy is often provided for free by the World Health Organization (WHO). Early diagnosis/treatment can help in preventing its progression in the body of the Carrier and also reduce the risk of its transmission.

A Historical Event And reflection on an action of discrimination

Establishment of leper colonies

In most parts of the world. In the nineteenth century, people who suffered from leprosy were forced out from society and sent to colonies which were often located in remote areas. The affected were stigmatized and ostracized.

An example is the island of Molokai , Hawaii. In the late 19th century, a leper colony was established ,so that lepers could be isolated from the society. The fear of the disease at that time caused forced separation and discrimination of people with leprosy.

It's hurts when we remember that discrimination based on health conditions has deep roots in history. People with bad medical health conditions are often stigmatized and it doesn't promote inclusivity and compassion towards individuals with medical complications. The experiences of those in leper in those colonies were as a result of the harmful impact of stigma and discrimination.

Conclusion

Remember not to discriminate people with health challenges. But rather, encourage them and give them the love and care the may need. Although, I've not seen anyone with leprosy physically, I've seen them on TV , read about it in books and I can imagine the pain that they bear. So, adding to the pain by discrimination and stigmatization is not polite and pleasant at all. There must be a positive change in this global attitude.

So this year's leprosy day falls on my birthday. Leprosy have been a desease that is not really talked about, hence when I saw the title I rushed because I needed to learn more about it. All I knew was it was feared and yes people deassociated themselves from people with Leprosy. Now this is me just using my imagination, imagine someone with a desease that shows on the skin, people having little to no proper information about it,will naturally bring about stigmatization to the infected person. Now reading that it is actually communicable makes me fear it the more. I have to come to the conclusion that the people that were not infected just had to create a form of barrier as a protection shield for the fear of the unknown. The WHO need to do more in educating the public about Leprosy cos many of us believe Leprosy is an old disease that we read in the Bible and hear on tales,it sounds like an old imagined sickness. Thank you for educating us more on it and drawing our attention to it. Cos Google here I come

Hola querido
