I think everyone at least once in their life heard this word Epilepsy we all know that this means seizures, often people think that this is the same condition but it is not. Let's look through the condition and learn a little bit.
Epilepsy is a condition that has origin in brain where we have different neurons that produce electric impulses, from one neuron to another, that is then transforms into information. That is how normal nervous system works.
If one neuron produces excessive excessive electric impulses then the receptor can receive that is abnormal and that can cause epileptic attack.
There are many causes of Epilepsy:
first and the most common is genetic, if anyone in family had close family members there are higher chances that the person can receive Epilepsy
head trauma, it could be any trauma on any stage of life and even if the person was healthy but after injury may suffer it
brain tumour, that is why if someone developed epileptic seizures without any other cause then it is important to exclude tumour because in that case it is run against time, the early diagnosis is done the better chances for early treatment
infection of brain that could cause swelling of brain and induce seizures
there are drugs: cocaine, ecstasy, heroin that could also cause epilepsy
brain injury during birth
It can happen out of blue that a person who was walking may collapse and have shakes of all body, we all know from TV or books that people may have foam in mouth, do you know what it happens?
The reason is that tongue also has shakes and saliva becomes foam
The person can not breath properly, again because muscles of diaphragm and chest does not work properly and a person's brain receive not enough oxygen, the person can hurt himself. That is why it is important to:
make sure that a person will not hurt himself, protect the head and airway
person gets enough oxygen, if there is any portable oxygen mask and cylinder that is one of the first aid
Often the person who just had attack may stare somewhere, may not talk for some time and also they will not remember what happens, so have amnesia for the period of seizure and for some time after.
*We all have seen on television warning notification about flashing images to be aware for people who suffer from epilepsy. Do you know the reason, why?
There is only 3% of all people who suffer from Epilepsy who have this sensitivity to flashing images and that is called Photosensitivity that is more common and happen in young age up to 20 years it is a bit uncommon on later stage of life.
I would like to invite @lusciouslucy, @maryemolinet and @jes88 to this contest
This is very educative, I've only been hearing a little about epilepsy but this post has given me a wider knowledge about the condition.
Nice job!
