Should Children be Taught Table Manners Early On? |
---|
The general idea of teaching the children table manners at early age is a topic that causes a lot of discussion among parents and teachers. Parents and educators who advocate for the teaching of manners at a tender age think that early practice is the best practice, since it influences the molding of the child’s character. Also, the knowledge of appropriate table etiquette can help the child in the pathway of his or her ability to interact with others successfully at a very early age.
Critics of early table manners say that children should learn on their own and insisting on making them adhere to certain eating etiquette might frustrate their ability to learn appropriately. Such sources believe that by pressuring kids to adopt certain behavioral standards during eating may have an adverse effect of suppressing their creativity.
We believe that to teach children table manners as soon as possible is right and good, but with gentle persuasion, and with far greater emphasis on the positive effects of good manners than on the negative effects of bad manners – negative effects that could be punitive in nature. Ensure children appreciate the practices concerning formal meal eating and make them undertake these practices in controlled circumstances so that they can grow to be respectable citizens.
