What is required of a man and woman before marriage?

Before marriage takes place between a man and a woman, there are a number of things that a man and a woman must know and show as evidence that they are actually prepared to marry.
These are:

• Love:
  They must show in words and actions that they have genuine interest and affection for each other.

• Loyalty:
  They must have strong attachment for each other. In this way, the man will not try to look at any other woman and the woman too will not attempt to keep any other man.

• Faithfulness:
  They must have confidence in each other. They must trust each other to the point that no person can succeed in separating them.

• Interdependence:
  They must know that both of them need each other and depend on each other. There is no marriage when either the man or the woman’s effort is absent. For them to succeed and build up a good family, they must work together as one.

• Service:
  They must show indeed that they are prepared to work for each other, serve each other and their children. They are to work together to
  achieve a high standard of living for their family.

• Protection:
  They must be ready to guide, support and keep each other safe from any form of danger or temptation. One way of doing this is to be ready to stay together, eat together, play together, talk together, work together and sleep together after marriage.

• Reproduction:
  They must be willing to have children. But they have to control themselves and avoid temptations to have sexual relationship, before marriage.

Unmarried young man and woman have a responsibility to the society. They are expected to face the big task of preparing themselves for their future, that is, to face their studies.

Therefore, they are not supposed to have any sexual relationship with anybody until they marry. They can do this by having self-control and self-discipline. A lady who is old enough to marry is called a spinster while a young man who is old enough to marry is called a bachelor.

• They may get unwanted babies if they have sexual relationship before marriage. This will badly affect their studies.

• They will not be able to live a good life if they marry too early since they may not have completed their studies or have a job.

• They may contact diseases and spread it to others. If care is not taken, some of these diseases such as AIDS can kill them.

• Our custom does not allow unmarried young people to have sexual relationship before marriage.

• To teach them good morals.

• To supervise their studies.

• To make sure they keep good company.

• To know their friends.

• To do medical check up for them regularly.

This happens when married couples have sexual relationship with their lovers outside the marriage. Such people are not faithful and loval to their marriage. As a result, many marriages have broken up.

What to do in case of unwanted pregnancy

Parents should seek the advice of a medical doctor. They should also consult a guidance counsellor. The girl should not be allowed to get rid of the pregnancy by crude means. The father of the unwanted child also need to see a guidance counsellor.

• Unmarried people should not go to late night parties.

• They should not drink alcohol.

• They must help their parents at home.

• They must avoid mixing up with bad gangs.
