Homework post on Safety
Introduction |
---|
It's no news that we ourselves are trying to be safety cautious, but most times we ourselves don't apply safety until enforced on us. We take risk at times all in the feeling that since others have done so, we too can. Why is safety a major concern today? Before I go further, I'll love to give a brief definition of the word Safety as the homework demands.
Definition of safety |
---|
Safety simply refers to actions and precautions we take to prevent injuries, accident or other serious negative consequences that may result from our not applying safety measures. Safety is further defined as that condition of minimizing or being protected from potential risks which in fact, could have negative effect on us. Just imagine you're working with tools like hammer, spanner etc, on a mass.
Let's assume the spanner mistakenly left your hand and headed down to the next person before you. That would mean serious damage on that person's cranium if he doesn't wear a protective helmet.
Mention five (5) things we can do to make sure that our homes are safe. |
---|
- Electrical appliances: Most of us do make the mistake of leaving electrical appliances on, maybe due to power outage. This can be hazardous as it can set the house ablaze when power is brought back.
Turning off electrical appliances after use is one way to ensure safety at home. Not just that, using sound electrical appliances, free from the presence of water should also be taken into consideration.
Arranging and keeping things in their rightful place is another measure we should treat as important. Imagine someone is stitching using hand needle and at the end forgets to return it, but rather place is on the bed at home. Guess what you think would happen.
Cleaning and tidying the house. This also is another important safety measure at home.
Avoid using phones while cooking in the kitchen. Some may not consider this hazardous until they experience first-hand, the reaction between phone's flashlights and ignited gas from the cylinder.
Keep drugs, sharp objects and other dangerous things away from children. I can recall when a baby drank Hypo thinking it was milk because the mother kept it on the dining table. As to safety, ensure your doors are properly locked before going to bed at night.
- Fire extinguishers and sand buckets should be kept round corners in the school premises especially if it's a boarding school.
Lab attendants are advised to supervise any practical carried out by students especially when handling chemicals.
While in the laboratory, ensure you wear safety lap coats, googles and gloves when necessary.
Ensure while carrying out any sport activities in school especially basketball, you are well covered to avoid major injuries.
Desks, tables, doors and the likes of them should not have any open nails in them. All nails in these furnitures should be fitted to avoid major injury by students.
- As I said on the onset, different work have different safety wears to avoid major injuries and contamination. So ensure you put on these safety wears before starting work.
Ensure you're skilled in a particular thing before carrying it out to avoid injuries.
If you're working in a tedious industry that has to do with manufacturing and production, ensure you put on safety googles to avoid particles from entering the eyes.
Fire extinguishers should be mounted on every corners in case of emergency. This applies to engineering works and the likes.
- Ensure you make proper use of electrical appliances and store them in a cool and dry place as well with other non-electrical appliances.
With these measures and lot more,I basically think our safety is more important to us than anything else. A little unsafe measure can cost our lives. Don't always be forced to take safety measures even though they might seen absurd or uncomfortable.
