Honesty is the best policy

In a rural village ,in the east of Nigeria a little boy asked his mother a question;
Boy: Mama why should I be honest when everyone is dishonest. His mother was truly amazed by her sons sense of reasoning and confidence ,but she wasn't surprised . Her son has always been a very smart child. She then asked ;
Mama: what is the matter my child ?

Boy:Everybody at school tell lies steal and cheat at exams and no one punishes them ,if being honest is truly rewarding why do those who are dishonest continue to enjoy . His mother laughed loudly and said;
Mama : you are very correct my child ,in today's world it seems like doing what is right only puts you behind others and those who do wrong things just keep doing better .My child do you know that honesty and being honest isn't just
Just expressed outwardly it can be inwardly expressed. Even if others laugh at your being honest in things ,there is joy in knowing that in your heart you did the right thing . when I was your age, you see my own mother used to say if you want to be honest don't do it for them ,do it for yourself. It means you can find contentment in your heart that you are doing what is right and not for others .

Let me tell you this story , it is the story of how the King of our village became the king . Back in the days our parents did not go to schools , they were illiterates , but that didn't stop them from imparting morals in we their children .Unlike some of the other parents in the villages , they let their Children loose without morals of honesty and respect . The Eze of that time and his queen were not able to have children and as they were ageing they needed an heir . They were loving and Honest people ,they judged justly and put their subjects interests ahead of theirs and that was why they were loved and respected by their subjects . But as they began to grow even older their anxiety grew with them. Someone needed to be the next king but no one could just be chosen ,they had a nephew who could have been in line to be the next king but he was a bad egg . They now resorted to choosing from the clans in the village .

The queen came up with an idea on how to produce the best candidate from the clans and this idea was fantastic to the king. He summoned the elders from the ten clans and related his strategy to them , he said ;
King : we give this task to you ,each clan will give out his best sons to take on the challenge. They would each be given a plot of land to plow and cultivate beans with the seeds we would give them ,at the end of the harvest whomever brings in the best produce becomes the next king . They were all astonished by this easy task for they were all master beans farmers and they were successful at it .
There were 10clans , each brought a son to do the challenge , these were their names accordingly.
Clan 1 obi
Clan 2 Aka
Clan 3 Ebi
Clan 4 Mba
Clan 5 Obioma
Clan 6 Ifeanyi
Clan 7 Ikechukwu
Clan 8 Ikenga
Clan 9 Okwu
Clan 10 Orji

Each took a bag of bean seeds and went to plant . And when the harvest season arrived, they all brought their produce before the king in large quantity and quality without stain. The king was certainly amazed and impressed .
But Orji from the 10th clan came empty handed and knelt before the king and said
Orji:I have wronged you o king , please forgive me for I tried but to no avail , I watered everyday and added manure but they couldn't grow , I hereby accept any punishment you may give to me . The king and queen were filled with tears of joy that they immediately declared him King of the kingdom , every other person was surprised and confused , Obi from the first clan stepped in and said;
Obi: o king you clearly said it yourself that whomever brings the best produce becomes king ,how is it that you can ignore my bounty and proclaim this man king , I produced the best of them all. The king went on to say
King : you wicked and cheat I gave you boiled beans to plant how could they have grown if you all did not replace them with another seed what you have brought to me is worthless , but here Obi has brought us the best harvest .He has brought the harvest of his patience and Honesty which far surpass what you have brought .
The king then ordered them out of the palace premises ,out of disgrace and shame ,they all left with a sigh .And obi became the new Eze.
Boy : o mama what a nice story that was
Mama : yes it is
Boy : I want to be like Orji ,I want to be honest ,because now I know that Honesty is the best policy.

Lessons from this story.

1. Always be honest because,your story can change tomorrow.
2. A a dishonest persons pot of lies will eventually fill and disgrace will follow him or her.
