HOW TO DRAW WITH SCRIBBLES (CONTEST: SCRIBBLING - LESSON 1).
Great Day Steemians,
I've been a huge fan of the steemit community for over 7 years now. I've had so many friends who had left me here and moved on with their lives in other things but here I am always hoping that someday, steemit would be great again and I still hope so......
I've also thought of leaving the community so many times due to lack of visibility and engagement but then I just couldn't because the community also helps to contribute to my, consistency as an artist. A very big thank you to @wakeupkitty, she has successfully revived my hope and interests to an interesting level again and I am so grateful for that.
Well, some of you know me and some of you don't until now. Whether you knew me before now of just now, I am glad to introduce myself to you as Ambali Omotayo Babatunde, AKA - Tezzmax, AKA - Nucleus and I am a Professional Visual Artist from Nigeria. Considering all the good, interesting and encouraging comments I've been receiving over the years about my Scribble Drawings, today I intend to do some sort of teaching on how to make drawings with the Scribble technique.
Scribbling is a technique of drawing that is simply but quite tricky and technical. Firstly, you need to understand that for you to be able to Scribble well, you have to be conscious and at the same time free like a bird....... I shall explain better with the aid of images.....
Above is a Scribble Drawing of an open Avocado fruit with its seed intact. Now let's draw this together..........
STEP 1.
For a beginner, it is important that you first of all draw out the shape of the object you intend to draw with thin or faint lines. This is to guide you not to run out of balance and proportion when you start shading the object.
A master could decide not to make an outline sketch but as a beginner, you need to start with this and grow with it.
STEP 2.
For many other styles and techniques of drawing, you could decide to start shading your drawing from the darkness point but never try that while scribbling.
After you must have outlined your object with fainted lines, go ahead and map out (circle) the areas where you have your highest light (the spotlight). The spotlight is an area where you would be conscious of when you start shading and make sure no heavy line of shadings comes into that spot...... If you look at the picture in step 1, you would see where I circled out on the seed and that's where my spotlight is, it's not so big of a space, but it's so important and I must treat it as such.
After you must have identified and circled your spotlight. You look that the areas of your object that are not dark neither are they so light nor bright, these areas are usually the largest part of your object and they are called the middle tones areas. To identify the darkest areas on your object is always very simple but let's treat the middle tone with all the respects for now.......
STEP 3.
At this stage, you're expected to circle out the shadow of your object which is going to be one of the darkest areas of your drawing. Moving on, you would start your shading within the middle tone areas of your object. Drive your pen or pencil through these areas with so much freedom. You could even allow your strokes/lines go outside the shape of your object but mind you (just few lines should go out).
As you play around with your strokes, this is the simple and most important rule, (PLAY LESS WITH YOUR LINES ON THE MIDDLE TOME AREAS, DO NOT PLAY WITH YOUR LINES ON YOUR SPOTLIGHT AREAS (LEAVE IS BLANK OF POSSIBLE), PLAY WITH SO MUCH LINES AND INTENSITY ON THE DARKEST AREAS OF YOUR OBJECT BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE YOU HAVE YOUR MAJOR FREEDOM.
Now, here is a simply trick..... Are you expected to keep moving your lines about within the darkest areas alone? NO! That would make the drawing appear less fun and the finish piece would lose synergy. You can move several lines from your darkest areas into your middle tones areas but just be conscious of the intensity of the lines you throw and you'll have a very fantastic drawing at the end of the day!
Do you find this helpful?
Do you need more help?
A Simple Contest!
Draw a circle, at your own discretion, circle out your spotlight and shade in your middle tone areas and your darkest areas too. Give it a shadow and shade your shadow and you will see a ball at the end of the day.
Do not attempt this with any reference pictures, just draw a circle and scribble within it!
Share the image of your entry as a comment beneath this post. Only entries shared before this post payout are valid.
Three most fascinating attempts would get a share from this post's rewards. I can't wait to see all your beautiful attempts! 😍
Thanks to @joslud, some SBI would also be part of the prizes. Let's get things done with scribbles and freedom!
If you do have any questions, kindly share them as comments below, I shall reply to them all as soon as I can. Do have a great day and keep scribbling! 😉

Hi , I have tried to draw a circle in the shape of a ball using the scribbles technique, which you can see in the picture below. Along with it, I have also included some steps of making this drawing in picture form. I only had a Blue Ballpoint pen available, so I used that. Please share your thoughts about it. Did I succeed in making it according to your guidance? I look forward to your feedback.
Thank you.

Hi, @rashid001
Are you sure you've never drawn? 😉🤣
Did you draw remembering a sphere or seeing a model?
Great work. As a practice, I think it's excellent. Congratulations.
I think it loses depth because of the amount of shadow you use around the circle, which flattens the sphere instead of giving it three-dimensionality. Making it look like a hole instead of a sphere at times.
The color of blue on white 😍 Your doodles are amazing, although they look a little tired from one side..
Your observation is absolutely correct. I did darken the shade on one side. And I said that I had never used this technique for drawing before, although I have made a pencil drawing of a sphere before, whose link I am sharing below. The scribbles technique is completely stress free, and you have to move the pen freely. I liked this style of drawing very much. And I thank you for your encouraging words.
I like it, such a perfect ball but I wonder about the scribble technic since there are different methods.
Don't you like to make a post out of it to be noticed more?
I wonder about the light fall (light spots) on the ball and the shadow.
Good luck friend.
🍀♥️
P. S. I wonder what your son would draw.
The pen looks great
I truly appreciate your kind words about my drawing! 😊
It was a thoroughly thrilling experience for me. I'm eager to see more entries from others and believe that those who regularly create drawings should try this style. After all exploring new ideas is the best way to expand our knowledge.
Perhaps you can invite someone? I wonder about the doodlers 🤔
Yes i would like to invite @caringmanasseh , @arinaz08 , and @zisha-hafiz to explore this new art ( Scribbles technique ).
This is quite lovely!
Beautiful attempt!
Thanks 😊 for your lovely and encouraging words.
You're very much welcome.
Brother i saw you tag and tried it out and i really had a nice time doing it @tezzmax. Thank you for the mention on a normal note i would have drawn the circle first but i decided to try it your way and it came out well. Sorry i did mine digitally.
Yo brother.
This is quite an attempt. So lovely. It's more oval to be considered an egg already. You did a great job with the shape and your lines. Well done.
🤩
😊
Ball, sphere, or egg I like it 😁
Thank you 😊
Awesome love this easy and light way of your lines. It is obvious that you did it before!
This is all I can do, I don't know what you think 😅
It's excellent that you've attempted to draw! You've successfully created the shape circle form outside.
However, the tutorial emphasized the importance of freely moving the pen, which doesn't seem to be the case here. I notice that you've moved the pen in a single sequence, resulting in similar lines. Nevertheless, it's a commendable effort. With consistent practice, you'll be able to create even more impressive drawings.
Well, I am just a beginner after all, who is used to using a pen to write numbers.
I hope there will be further explanations by @tezzmax on the types of lines in this doodling technique and their uses in drawings.
Hello friend, sure there'll definitely be more to the lessons and learnings. Kindly stick around. Thank you.
You have my vote again. 😁
It is a ball 100% and I had a very close look at it. If all lines would have been in the same direction it wouldn't have looked like a ball and it does. Actually I like these stripes.
You should try out which type fits best to you and also right to the left (or other way round) and up down or down and up.
🍀♥️
Yes, many times... and thank you very much for that, hopefully it won't stop 😉
Granted the lines still look very amateurish, but at least it's entertaining for the viewer.
This is actually nice.
Love your unique lines.
Thank goodness for that,
Looks like a doughnut, hahah...
Lol... That's true, it somehow does.
Great tutorial ! This technique is completely new to me. I've never tried drawing like this before, but you've explained it so well that I feel inspired to give it a shot.
As you mentioned, it's about being mindful and feeling free, like a bird. This reminds me of Mind Doodle art, but that's more about relaxation and doesn't involve drawing objects. However, your art requires drawing objects, which means controlling lines and ink quantity is crucial.
It sounds you are in. Is the explaination clear to those who never draw?
Yes, I think @tezzmax has excellently explained this drawing technique. It's beneficial for anyone interested in drawing, whether beginners or experts, to try creating art using this method.
Perhaps using a ballpoint pen would be ideal for this type of drawing.
Thank you @rashid001.
I make use of ink pen myself but I intentionally didn't suggest any medium to be used because any medium capable of making lines on paper is good enough.
Suggestions and considerations would come after we've see what people created with what they have and could afford.
The truth is this is a tiny ball and I used the macro option to take the photo (lack of paper - sorry).
I used a pen (the 3rd - 1 was empty the next leaked terrible).
I hope some more will join.
Use for the lessons the hashtags:
#artonsteemit #scribble #drawingclass #learnwithsteem #howto
And let's see wif you can promote it this way.
@jiya99 @jiva34 @grebmot how about a scribble ball?
Nice attempt Kitty.
You should really invest more time in commenting, supporting and promoting or this won't work.
Did you change the hashtags?
I didn't change anything.
I replied all the comments I could.
Any problem?
If you do not change the hashtags it is hard to be found!
Imagine I am the beginner, the one you say is welcome and you started this course for. There are no mistakes you said and I do my stinking best to give you an entry.. your reply has exactly 3 words and one of them is my name. "nice attempt" sounds like ....
May I ask why you are more enthusiast if you see the entry of an artist like @rashid001?
Do you have any idea how you will teach, stimulate, and motivate those who join or will you give each one of them the "nice try" answer?
Is there something wrong? I would call it disappointment
@joslud
You have made a good effort to create a ball shape. However, in my opinion, explaining this technique through words is not easy. Because whoever has never drawn before will first need to practice different shapes. And then, they will need to understand the details of spotlight and shades. After that, controlling the pen strokes and ink quantity is also important. And most importantly, to achieve the desired result, setting the brightness, contrast, and exposure of the final result is necessary. Because just a camera picture cannot show the result of your drawing, unlike what it would look like after editing.
Shapes and drawing materials but this is a contest for beginners so why is it you received a great response and me the beginner didn't? Will it be stimulating to join again or make me the beginner think: No way, no one teaches it's for those who already know?
From my perspective, if you approach this with a curator's mindset, you might find the answer. A curator typically wouldn't want to repeatedly visit the same contest post's entries. This is because numerous posts are submitted daily, making it impossible to cover them all. Personally, I usually visit a post once or twice, and then my attention shifts to newer posts. I don't continually check the comment section of a post that's six days old. I assumed this post had expired, but since you brought it up, I was able to view additional entries.
I'm so sorry if that got you offended. I could have been able to annalize and give proper comment on your entry but your other highlight on hashtag took off my attention already. You gave me more than a thing to attend to in just your comment and I wouldn't have just left the entry and not make any comment.
Imagine... I am new. How to find the spotlights and the shadow? Also, what are those scribble lines you make?
Are these all strokes?
Circles?
Are you drawing 8s?
@genoar @sbamsoneu @rashid001 @jiya99 can you draw a circle and scribble a bit and share how you did it?
How can I not give an upvote. 🍀
Art & Artists
Your inquiries are spot on, and finding the answers will greatly enhance understanding it for every art lover. Since this technique is unfamiliar to me, I'm eager to explore it. Having previously attempted drawing a circle with a pencil, I'm now curious about the outcome using this innovative method.
The technique might be unfamiliar to you but you are an artist and know how to draw. Wouldn't it be great to see entries of non artists, hobbyists or lay?
🍀♥️
If I do answer these questions like you might what me to, then I'll be boxing the idea of scribbling which I don't like to do.
Scribble doesn't have a specific way or pattern to its line movements, it's just about the artist's freedom even while conscious of the subject or object being drawn.
You line movements could be in circles while that of another artist could be in zigzag but the beauty of it lies in the freedom and the synergy within the lines.
Finding a spotlight isn't difficult at all. Imagine having a table tennis egg on a table and having a strong spotlight directly to it. That part of the egg that the light illuminates so much to the point that it loses it initial colour is your spotlight area.
How about explaining that in your post?
Don't you think that is important to know for those who never held a pencil before except on kindergarten where no one taught or ever explained? It is great you do and canvand since you draw since years you will be surrounded by those with the same interest or skills but that doesn't count for the average person. There's a huge difference between doing and explaining/showing in easy to understand steps.
Do you remember the videos I showed to @sbamsoneu and what his answer was?
It sounds to me the first step is to find your personal scribble and even that (pen, pencil, brush), how to hold it comes with a certain technique and practising and the next step is drawing a ball and next spotlight and shadow.
Thanks for taking the time to explain.
🍀♥️
I understand you so well but I would prefer we leave art to be art. There are no mistakes, just more suggestions after we must have seen people's attempts.
I don't think youndo but I leave it here.
Lol... Okay 🤣
I want to try it !
Expect my entry very soon....
Is your entry ready @sahar78?
@tezzmax says there are no mistakes.
Of course there are none!
Obviously lots of room for improvement.
Trying something new is better than doing nothing. I like that you have put effort to draw . And this is the main thing.
I think you drew this with a pencil.
Thank you for the encouragement. I can try again next time.
Did you draw the circle?
What helps is to figure out what you like most.
Lines/stripes, waves, circles, 8s... I drew something else, something a friend put in his drawings.
It can also be your other hand can scribble better.
I like it you joined andsave it you can improve it in a few days/weeks.
🍀♥️🤗
If you think this bad you should see my "handwriting". I can't even read it.
Hi, @jiva34

Friend, I liked your attempt, a first execution, I hope to continue seeing more.
I see your sketch as an abstract interpretation of a circle.

Awesome. Abstract scribble art... As if scribble art isn't already abstract enough. You know I'll keep trying...
