RE: Contest: Art Commenting Contest

The painting is made by the Dutch artist, alcoholic and junk: Herman Brood. He jumped of the roof of the Hilton (11 July 2001))

According to pop expert Jip Golsteijn of De Telegraaf, Herman Brood's glory days as a rocker ended around 1980. "In July 1979, he had toured America with his band The Wild Romance, where he provided a number of support acts. Shortly afterwards, he blew up the band." Brood's body had been destroyed by alcohol and drugs and he had visibly deteriorated. The artist had thought up the scenario for his suicide some time ago and told one of his friends, the Hague writer Bart Chabot. "He wanted to jump," Chabot said. "Either from the Okura or the Hilton. I recommended the Hilton. I said that it was closer to his home. He had to laugh terribly about that."

A note was found on his body stating that he had lost interest in life. The note also stated: "Have a great party. And maybe I'll see you again."

The lifeless body of Herman Brood is taken to the morgue of a hospital.
Rotterdam comedian Jules Deelder, a good friend of Brood, also knows that it was a well-considered choice. "He had completely collapsed physically. I think it's good that he had a hand in his own death. It fits in with the way he lived.
Since the eighties, Herman Brood has mainly manifested himself as a visual artist. He made graffiti-like paintings with a spray can, which he used to finance his alcohol and drug addiction. Sometimes he simply worked in the Kalverstraat among the shoppers, to whom he often successfully sold his brand-new works for a few tens or a hundred guilders.
