Ummm... I can't speak for all. One reason could be SLC stealing most traffic. But we can't put the entire blame on that; there are possibly other reasons like you mentioned.

Your comment made me think why do I skip a contest... there are usually multiple reasons. Contests are a great way to gain visibility when you are new and I'm well past that stage. My first instinct is to scroll away whenever I come across one. But then, I'm also one of the free-spirited users; even in my early days, I mostly preferred writing freely, and by that, I mean, I'm not someone who'd just hold a pen and start writing immediately. I need time to get in the zone, be inspired and get the feels of what I'm about to write. So most contests don't give me the feels or, let's just say, are not relatable for me. If I want, I can dig up some information online on any contest topic (if it's new for me) and put together a post, but that's against my nature.

The same happened with this contest. I loved the idea but I didn't think about participating out of habit. And then the next day, I got inspired by an unexpected event and found my muse for the post.

That's how and why I participate.
