Exercising Once A Week Can Protect Against Dementia

in #health4 years ago

We already know that regular exercise is vital for good health and research shows it can do impressive things like help you sleep, prevent diseases, and extend your life. But a new study from the University of Queensland in Australia finds yet another benefit to working out as you get older and this one is all about the brain.

The study shows that for middle-age and older adults, exercising can improve cognitive function and may protect against dementia. And even better? They only have to do it once a week to reap the benefits. Researchers analyzed data from more than 16-thousand people between 54 and 75 over 13 years and found working out has a “significant impact” on mental fitness, especially for women.

Physical activity improved men’s brain function scores by an average of 5%, according to the study, but for women? It improved their scores by as much as 14%! And the more intense the workout, the bigger impact it has on the brain. Men who did both moderate and vigorous exercise raised their scores by 8% and women who did saw scores 15% higher - all from something as simple as one jog a week.
