Mind-Body Wisdom
We carry within each of us the seeds of healing and the wisdom of the ages. These reside in our cells, genes, memories, and collective awareness.
Wellness is the sincere desire to open our awareness fully and completely to the mind-body (and spirit) connection and the possibility of letting this innate knowledge direct the course of our lives.
Our lives are about choices—eat the piece of cake or eat the apple, exercise or go for a drink after work, lose out on sleep or sleep in, think positive thoughts or harshly judge yourself or others, be grateful for all you have or not… the list goes on.
These choices affect us more than we realize. When we dedicate our daily moments to the pursuit of wellness and all that entails, we are able to relax and renew ourselves.
Commit to a lifestyle that honors the innate wisdom that comes from within your body and within your mind.
Thoughts Make Energies
Where your thoughts (and heart) reside… so your body follows.
Your experiences and what you believe creates your thoughts and in turn your energies. The philosopher Descartes once said, “I think therefore I am”.
Everyday you take in millions of bits of stimuli from the environment, and your mind and body translates this into what you think, how you feel, your sense of safety, and all the internal energies that make you vital (or not).
The Emotional Landscape
All the emotions that you feel can be mapped out—they can be thought of as having high or low energy and being positive or negative.
Your emotions are tied to your autonomic nervous system, which operates all the functions in your body and your brain, but is not necessary “in the know”. There are 2 important parts of the autonomic nervous system: the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and each controls and operates differently in the body.
Emotions like anger, frustration, jealousy AND passion and joy are high energy and are associated with your sympathetic nervous system and the neurotransmitter adrenaline. The sympathetic nervous system has the role of protecting you from real or perceived danger and maintaining homeostasis (balance). Adrenaline (like cortisol) is a hormone that is part of our “fight n’ flight” self-preservation response.
Emotions like depression, self-apathy, loneliness AND tranquillity and peace are low energy emotions and associated with your parasympathetic nervous system, which is involved with digestion, reproduction, rest, and repair.
Stress and negative emotions result in the firing of the “fight n’ flight” response and the production of cortisol. A little stress here and there is helpful to body, but chronic stress day in and day out taxes the body and releases too much coritsol, which can damage tissue, organs, cause insulin imbalance, prematurely age us, and more.
Perception Is Becoming
Life is not a straight line for any of us and from time to time we all get a few curve balls thrown our way. But it’s your personal choice to deal with these amicably, with the least wear-n-tear possible.
If you step back and look objectively at the events and situations that occur in your life, you’ll start to see that it’s how you react to the things that occur in your lives that causes the issues (like stress).
It’s your feelings and how you perceive life that determines whether or not a situation is deemed good or stressful.
So it’s best to learn to look at life through a clear lens… one that is not clouded by emotions, drama or stress of one kind or another.
Replenish Your Emotions & Energy
Just like you need to take inventory of your life, relationships, or priorities, the same caretaking is required for your emotions.
If you don’t occasionally plug up places where you’re emotionally drained, you’ll end up tired, angry, and chronically ill. This means you have to take a good hard look at your life and see what people, places and situations “zap” you of your energy.
If you’re honest, you’ll see that certain people make you feel good, while others make you feel awful or after you spend time with them, you are exhausted. You also know what situations lift up your energy and which leave you depressed.
Just to Recap about the Mind Body Connection…
• Emotions and thoughts are energy… and this energy can benefit or harm your body
• Small little stresses, frustrations, or buried emotions will surface later on in the form of some health condition
• Frustration, insecurity, worry, and depressing feelings—stress the heart and nervous system
• Joy, appreciation, care, love, and kindness—create harmony in the body
• Get in touch with your feelings about situations in your life and don’t just react based upon those feelings
• Learn to look at both good and bad challenges more objectively so that you can take responsibility for them, not just get all stressed over them
• Take time to evaluate your mental and emotional habits so you can weed out the ones that just don’t improve the quality of your life and of those you care deeply about.
