Stem cells? A diversion while I'm installing the Perl dependencies (Steemit.pm!), for the program to tabulate the votes

in #health7 years ago

My wife and I are considering stem cell treatments. She needs two new knees, and this is a way to avoid cutting her legs off (basically) and putting in robotic knees. I've had four concussions in the past five years, and would like relief from the symptoms -- forgetfulness, irritability, headaches, and sleep issues. The irritability is the worst, as it has pushed a lot of people away. Fortunately, my wife is still with me!

And with the forgetfulness, it makes it very difficult to write code -- which, actually, I'm doing as I type! :)

I've found a Perl module that talks to the STEEM blockchain, so I'm installing its dependencies. There are two pieces, one on setting up Perlbrew which for me was necessary as Ubuntu's long-term support (LTS) version is 16.04.3, and doesn't have the version of Perl that the module's dependencies required (had 5.22, needed 5.24). The second is on creating the Perl module -- which is really neat, as it helps one learn the inner details of Perl modules as well. I've asked if they have a "cpan" version, or would like help creating one. It stands for Comprehensive Perl Archive Network, and is located here: https://www.cpan.org/ -- basically, it's a way of packaging a Perl module so that anybody with Internet access can install it, simplifying the process.

Stem Cell Clinic

We've found a clinic that performs stem cell injections: Dr. Jeffrey Donatello, located here: http://centerforwell.com/

Have you tried this treatment (or others), or do you know somebody who has? I'm looking for first- and second-hand experiences, specifically, although any knowledge of outcomes, negative or positive, is welcome.

I can say that this is basically the third iteration of the process.

Third Stage (but out of how many??!?)

The first iteration used aborted fetuses (a practice I find to be criminal, my personal beliefs), and when the harvested cells were injected, caused fingers to grow out of scalps, and many cancers. It was those experiences that gave "stem cells" a lot of negative press.

The second stage, and the one that I personally would prefer using, takes cells from either your bone marrow (painful, but better) or fat deposits (not nearly as painful, but also not as effective) and converts them to stem cells through some process, then injects them back into you.

The third step and the one that's currently being practiced, is to take umbilical cords and after-birth from healthy babies with healthy mothers, and save the stem cells that are a part of what would otherwise be waste products and reuse them. This is far more effective than using one's own fat or bone marrow cells, because the cells divide at the rate of the age of the organism they were taken from -- in other words, an 80-year-old's stem cells, while they'll help to a degree, won't help as much as umbilical stem cells. I forget the numbers I saw in the presentation we attended a month or so ago, but they were very different, like 2 million divisions from the adult-derived, versus 2 billion from the umbilical-derived.

And, it's also superior to the first stage -- which, although it also used "waste products," would have involved me in a murder. So I wouldn't do that, even if I didn't know about the extra finger side effects.

Of course, this is where the market is at right now. And, the doctor mentioned that the people who invested in the second stage process, want a return on their investment and so won't be likely to tell their prospective patients, "there's a new, more effective method."

Turning that back around -- how do I know there isn't a fourth stage, which is even superior to the third stage we're looking into? Well, that's one of the reasons I made this post. Both to inform others on what we've recently seen, and also to request information that others may have, which we don't.

My Preference: Stage Two

I would have preferred using my own, for two reasons: first, the "purely physical" issue that the DNA matches my own. If I had someone else's DNA, or "programming," in some cells, then they might react to environmental stimuli differently than my own do. Which might confuse "my" cells, or cause dizziness, or other dis-ease (intentionally hyphenated to highlight that "disease" is when you're not at ease; when there's an irritant of some form), up to and including death (it's on the clinic's forms!).

Secondly, there's the spiritual/demonic issues -- will I have a portion of someone else's soul? Or, be linked to them somehow? Will I have "memories" of being in a womb I was never in? And karmic issues; some paths we choose don't make the consequences of the choice known for years. For instance, I had someone steal from me, ignored him for the most part, and many years later learned he went on to much larger thefts and is now imprisoned and will be deported after serving time. That made me feel really bad -- I mean, perhaps if I had fought back more (and left the "turn the other cheek" lesson behind earlier), then he might have "felt pain" from his choice of resource gathering, and perhaps chosen a more honest line of work. But because I "made it easy" for him, I helped him to his current destination. And I feel some remorse about that, almost every day.

"There is Permanence in Change" (or vice versa[1])

Additionally, we were told that this treatment may need to be repeated in two years. So, this change won't be permanent.

The Package

We're looking at a 6-cc package. One cc infused for my wife, which the doctor said is generally a good idea before any "spot" injections, as the bloodstream takes the stem cells around the body and they help wherever they can. Infusion is where they put it in a bag on a hook, with a tube to a needle in your arm, and it slowly drips in, taking a half hour or so. Then the injections into her knees, 1 cc each. I'll have 3 ccs infused, along with Mannitol, which will help the stem cells cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB).

Does Mannitol work?

From my (minimal) research, I've found that Mannitol only opens the BBB for ten minutes or so. The doctor had mentioned that each infusion takes about a half hour. So, I wonder -- will only a third of the stem cells get in to help my concussion symptoms? Even if that's the case, I think it's still worth doing, as I have other health issues which they can help by moving around my bloodstream.

The ceiling fan gradually moves slower and slower, until it basically comes to a stop.

When I was in Florida, I did a lot of research into nanotechnology. Almost set up a $25k prize associated with a nanotech goal as well, until I lost it all (longer, separate story :) ). One of the stories I came up with was that there'd be a pill one could take, which contained nanomachines in it which would make their way to the brain, and then convert it, in-place, into a more powerful processor. The basis of my story was from the Engines of Creation (a book) mention that a nanomachine the size of a sugar cube could be millions of times more powerful than the human brain.

So I thought, I can fit many sugar cubes inside my skull! And especially easy if the conversion process could be done while the subject is fully awake, with no anesthetic (aside: recently I found a dentist who uses a laser for drilling -- which also removes the need for anesthetic!), just by taking a pill.

Then I visualized the experience of having this conversion done. Take the pill, sit back in my chair and watch the ceiling fan (because I was in Florida) spinning; and, while watching it, notice that it gradually moves slower and slower, until it basically comes to a stop.

Why? Because I'm thinking millions of times faster than I was a few minutes ago! And, I also realized that this would effectively create "two classes of citizens" -- because, who would want to sit in conversation with a "slower" and wait for a few years (subjectively) between the words they speak?

I don't think these injections will have that dramatic an effect. Both the doctor and his wife (who practices Reiki, aligning with the energy healing modalities I know of as well) have had stem cells injected; the doctor, for neuropathy in his foot; one in his knee; and one done via infusion. I think his wife said she had both hers infused.

What's it going to be like?

I'm wondering what my experience is going to be like, sitting there while someone else's DNA drips into my blood stream, and is carried into my brain via the Mannitol. What thoughts will I think, and will some of them be "alien?" Will I try to think "alien" thoughts, either to anticipate or to counter any actual ones? It's giving me a headache thinking all this through -- and hopefully, after the treatment I'd be able to think this through without pain.

"The Grifters"

There was a scene in the movie The Grifters which I have kept recalling, throughout my life. It's the one where John Cusack's character is doing the sales pitch to the oil executive, telling him they have a secure link between NY and London and can put a 7-second delay in, so they would have an advantage to move first on trades when news happened. He said while starting to open a door, "We have a room full of computers, want to see it?" The camera could see behind the door, and there was like trash and boxes and stuff in the room! The oil guy said "No, I trust you" and the story continued (with the oil guy fleeced).

When we arrived at the clinic, he pointed to a box with shipping info on it, saying "those are the cells that arrived today, and will be injected tomorrow." (I actually considered walking over to them and putting my hands on the box, to see if I could detect any cold leaking out; but, I didn't.) He also said that he had just gotten back from a visit to their facility, as it was gold-star rated (etc), and he wanted to see it for himself.

So, my first recollection of that scene from "The Grifters" was whether he had been hoodwinked, on his visit out to their facility.

Then, while driving home (and probably just before my abdominal pains started, and haven't let up -- it's several days later now; I bought an enema and will try it later today, hopefully that'll resolve it and I won't need a doctor's visit tomorrow), I had the further thought that perhaps he was the John Cusack character, and we're just going to be getting "expensive" saline injected.

Of course I have no reason to doubt him, other than knowing that where there's a lot of money, charlatans congregate... Oh, and he was a chiropractor before starting this practice, which some can point to and say "not a real doctor" -- although I'm not one of those; I have benefited from chiropractic treatments, although also -- in my experience some are far better than others, and some caused me harm.

Please share any experiences you have!

This is new and dangerous and scary, and my belly has been in knots the past few days and might be related to our investigating, discussing, and financing this venture. It's also wonderful and opening and freeing and passionate. And likely, many things in between.

If you have any experience with this, please share! Hopefully it will help us make our final decision.

Voting results are coming!

I've written a script to help with tabulating the votes. It has determined the top 50 votees. The "Steemit.pm" (mentioned in the title and the introduction above) will help with the next phase, which is to check whether each account is eligible, based on "followers * 10 + SP" must be less than 10,000. Should be simple to do the calculations, and I actually started writing a Python program to take the Perl program's output, but then thought "someone probably wrote a Perl module by now" -- and turns out, 9 days ago someone (@hoffmann) did!

In fact, I'm sure it's done installing in the VM by now (the fans have slowed down :) ), so -- back to tabulating the votes!

The Race -- predictive?

Oddly, we'll be injected with something very similar to my Flame Painter painting, "The Race"! :) I drew that in September, well before we had any idea this treatment even existed. Not exactly the same though; more, nine months (plus a finish line) later. :)

Enjoy!

really interesting. a break away from my normal technical analysis. appreciate the content and diversity.

Hey, thanks man! Great to see "Mama Whale" (his term for himself in his videos :) ) stopping by my blog -- and, I noticed you followed me earlier, thanks!

Really appreciate your free assistance. Found you after the huge angry whale fight against @haejin, who also does good work for free -- which gets the haters going who are trying to make money from their analysis.

Need more time in the day to watch all the videos, LOL! The good news though is -- and this is for everyone -- after spending enough time studying @haejin and @philakonecrypto, reading books about Elliott Wave etc, you won't need them any more, and that's such a wonderful thing!

I find myself drawing 5-wave impulses everywhere now. Heh, perhaps I'll leave some as graffiti, in a kind of "pay-it-forward" type of thing. Then again, I don't have cans of spray paint, so perhaps I'll just leave the graffiti here. :)

Actually this gave me a really great idea, which I will report on after trying it.

The Grifters is a great movie. That's funny you thought about it in the doctor's office... feel the package, open the door! I would have similar doubts. I went to an expensive chiropractor for a very bad back issue once and I only went with a friend that needed treatment a couple of weeks later. The doctor gave me an adjustment anyway and was surprised that I was doing much better. He asked me what I did to recover... I told him ice and rest... he seemed embarrassed... I had discovered the secret formula!

LOL "ice and rest"! :) Yeah I really enjoyed that movie as a teenager, even more so when I realized just how much of the world is described therein...

Another good one, if you're thinking about becoming a landlord, is "Pacific Heights" with Michael Keaton. The short version: "don't!" :)

Dear libertyteeth. I work with stem-cells. My start-up company builds a product that enables the multiflication of stem-cells and to be able to use them for medical usage ( which is a problem at the moment, and yes we almost all scientist want to use patients own tissue to isolate the stem-cells and multiply them). However, the practice you are talking about sounds dubious to me. I am working with many scientist, that are researching possibilities for stem-cells, but are still at early stages. Regenerative medicine isn't as far as we would like it to be, and though there has been medical doctors that did research on stem-cells to treat pain and arthritis, I thought this was years ago and did not live-up to its expectation, but I am not up to date anymore. Did you ask about it in your own hospital?
I am a chemist myself and not a biologist or medical doctor, so I will ask around and I will try to find out more for you. I will get back to you.

Thanks! You know, I was reluctant to discuss it with my primary care, who actually called me Friday for an unrelated matter. Then I made this post, to discuss it "anonymously" with others.

A few hours ago, I realized that I really should talk to him about it. I will make an appointment with him tomorrow to discuss.

Thanks for helping find answers! Very much appreciated.

Thanks, I hope you find something that helps you and your wife. It is very hard when the medical profession doesn’t have a clear answer for your problems.
You could try to use DISQOVER.com to put in your symptoms and try to find out what kind of solutions there might be or trials going on. This tool was created by a dad who couldn’t find out what was wrong with his child with learning disabilities. He wanted to help people who can’t get an answer to their problems, but the internet is a mess and hard to get through. This tool is used by pharma ( paid) to find all info on certain medicine or disease or symptoms , but is open to the public to use.
In addition on the stem cell question, in the Netherlands ( I am Dutch so biased) at the Utrecht hospital they do surgeries and treatment with stem
-cells that are not from the patient ( allogeneic), but after surgery. So it is a practice that is starting. I work together with Hubrecht institute linked to this hospital, where they do the stem-cell research and they are highly esteemed in the world.

Neat, thanks! I did a bunch of research yesterday and feel much better about this, now.

NOTE: I had clicked "Reply" to you, wrote the reply, clicked the upvote button, then clicked "Post". This comment ended up under @fishyculture's reply to me! I think the comment response box code might have e.g. "second comment under parent" and when I upvoted it changed the comment order -- thus, "second comment under parent" became @fishyculture's comment, and it was posted there.

This is not the first time this has happened, and it seems to have started fairly recently. My kingdom for a Bugzilla for Steemit!

lol, well it’s here now. And I like the reply to fishyculture as well. I just love silence. I have always loved it. Some people think I’m nuts, but I also believe it’s part of being at easy with yourself, hearing yourself think, and just being...

Oh sorry, I forgot to add that I had to copy then delete the one under hers, and then paste it into a new comment under yours.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying silence. Meditating seems to have taken hold as well. I'm using Headspace; they have a phone app as well as a website http://headspace.com -- it's guided meditation. I've started doing one on pain management, actually just last night, perhaps it wasn't only the research that cured that blockage.

Yes, "just being" isn't easy in this fast-paced world!

Let us know how it goes, please! We are OK for now, but I can see knee problems in our future, they already talk to us when we don't want to hear from them...

It's funny to hear you phrase it that way! I've been on a reading tear recently (well, the fact that many of these books don't break triple digits in terms of page count likely helps -- Kindle books, following authors and suggestions), I think I've read 6 books in the past couple weeks.

they already talk to us when we don't want to hear from them...

One of them was "Hear Your Body Whisper" and is about wanting to hear from them! :)

My knees pop when I walk up stairs. Not necessarily every flight of stairs; but, I've gotten so I know when it's about to happen. Which came about gradually -- first it was a surprise; then I knew, the instant before; later I could tell one stair step before; and now, it's like 3 or 4 steps prior.

I wonder if the stem cells will find their way down to my knees, and start making copies and reduce the popping. It's so weird to think that I'm introducing a "virus" of sorts into my body ("virus" from my programming experience, that is) -- something which contains different programming which will make copies of itself and live off the energy that I gather. But unlike a parasite, it will also help with repairs. I'll gladly collect a bit of extra energy to help those little guys! :)

That sounds like an interesting read - I am definitely an advocate for listening to your inner self. I do not claim to be psychic or anything special, but getting kicked out of the rat race forced me to listen to the quiet, and it is amazing all the things you hear when you are not listening to the freeway, your boss bitching, the TV blaring...
I have got to get back into reading books, the internet sort of just stopped it. There is so much information, on whatever topic, with lights and colors... lol!

YES! Exactly. And if you get bored with your current input, many various others are a click away!!! :) You don't even need to change your posture -- which is likely part of the source of my pains.

It's funny, my experience is rather similar; they started kicking me out but then I took myself out with repeated blows to the head. And the silence from recovering from the concussions was absolutely necessary -- and, insightful!

I like driving with no music now, so I can hear the car talking to me about its troubles. So I can fix them before they become my troubles!

I sit here with both of @haejin's books to my right. Still on the beginning of chapter 2. There's so much coming out of this blasted machine!!! :)

Yeah, I can hardly stand the hum of appliances on some days now, I have become quite fond of silence! Ironic, as the loudest hum is the computer... :)

Yes, its output is not only lights and sounds, there's also that creepy fan that changes speed, in this new laptop.

I need to check if there's a "minimum" fan setting, so most of the time it won't increase the fan -- but if some stupid web site decides to mine cryptos while I'm reading because I've got an ad blocker turned on, I want to hear the fans crank up!

Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. In addition, in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

I have seen some amazing results, but have not tried it myself. Good luck to you and @countrylover!

We'll be the pioneers here, and will report on our posterior arrow collection. :) Thanks!!

what if i tell you i just came here to enjoy the music ;)

We're all here for various experiences, so, you're cool too. :)

sorry to say i dont have experience this thing but hope any one give you some better advice from your followers and the one thing that you must ask some one who treated with this and then go for it to check thier results and every thing sides and good effects
really this is dangrous and scary and best wishes for your both and humbly request to GOD to give you both much happines eachother and good health

I spent some time yesterday watching a bunch of testimonials. Sure, they could be paid actors; I didn't get a chance to interact with them. The doctor (as a chiropractor) has great reviews as well.

ohhh its really strange and i have not any exprience in my life and not seeing a single any one so cannot suggest you any one
hope you found it with your good research and it will be better i think you should contact with some other world best which have much experience and have better result in thier past cases @libertyteeth

Transferring the cells from the bone marrow and transplanting them to another human being requires a consensus in the blood group and also requires complex tissue coherence (CMH)
Such operations are very difficult, but with the development of technology in medicine has become somewhat easy, these scientific clarifications are very important, worth pursuing, thank you @libertyteeth

Interesting -- they didn't ask my blood type. Perhaps umbilical stem cells are undifferentiated even including blood type?

My knowledge of medicine is limited, but cell transplantation must correspond to the blood group, because it is the carrier of immune cells in the human body @libertyteeth

Thanks for the motivation to look this up! It appears that stem cells are matched to the recipient with HLA, a protein "marker" indicating whether it belongs in your body or not.

https://bethematch.org/transplant-basics/matching-patients-with-donors/how-donors-and-patients-are-matched/

Enjoy!

It is useful information thank you, and the transfer of members from one person to another, requires a complex consensus C M H @libertyteeth

well sorry i skipped half of the post and to be honest came straight to the comment box when you said about the knee problem my mom too had this problem and everyone was saying for an operation to get it replaced but i have heard this stem cell thing if this is a success please share it soon and sorry for not reading ;p

Perhaps by the end of the week, we'll have some news to share. :)
