These Are The Infections You Can Get Through Kissing

Here are the 4 possible infections that can be transmitted through mouth-to-mouth contact with an infected person:

1. Syphilis

"Syphilis is a highly infectious condition, and one of its hallmarks is the development of sores in the mouth," said Louisiana-based OB-GYN Antonio Pizarro. The sores are round and open which allows the bacteria (Treponema pallidum) to spread through close contact. But, note that chances are quite low compared to transmission via sexual activity.

2. Mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), this infection is also known as the "the kissing disease." The infected person may have symptoms like swollen lymph glands, loss of appetite, fever, sore throat, and extreme fatigue. Younger people between 15 to 30 years of age are most likely to be affected by this infection. Aside from kissing, mononucleosis can also be transmitted through sharing toothbrushes or glasses, coughing, and sneezing.

3. Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease. The infection can be transmitted through contact with infected saliva.

"Kissing someone who has gum disease or cavity-causing bacteria can cause someone else who previously had a low concentration of 'bad' bacteria to 'catch' dental problems," said California-based dentist Mark Burhenne.

It is highly recommended to maintain a good oral hygiene (brushing twice a day, flossing, etc.) to protect yourself against these kinds of bacteria.

4. Herpes

Oral herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which is also referred to as cold sores. The infection can be easily spread through kissing, and women are said to be more susceptible than men to the virus. The transmission risk is higher if there are any sores in the mouth or on the lips. According to medical experts, take a quick look at the mouth area before kissing someone as herpes-related blisters and sores are quite noticeable.
