RE: Exploring Masculinity - Episode 1

in #health7 years ago

The thing about men not talking... it is hard for men to be open and vulnerable because of the way society responds. To open up, it invites criticism. Sometimes that can really hurt when someone insults a weakness you are opening up about. As a man, I can react by playing the victim and defend my weakness, but society doesn't usually let me get away with that, and therefore I feel like I am not good at it. Someone always points out someone else who has it worse than me, so I can never justify my own feelings to them. People say "Buck up", or "Suck it up". If it is a woman, they are more likely to say "There, there, you poor thing, I know exactly how you feel." It gets to the point where I often feel embarrassed if people start flipping their response from tough love into coddling reassurance. I think you just have to be careful how much information you reveal, and who you share it with. I probably have secrets I will go to the grave with because it just makes life easier for me and everyone around me.

I think it wholly depends on who your friends are and who you open up to!
