Aquaponics, Homesteading Done Right! Part 2.
Hey everyone, I did a nice little video on this system a while ago for that video check my dtube link here https://steemit.com/homesteading/@craigcryptoking/1o97dpih I just had too many pictures to put on that post so decided to do it in a part 2 series.
Here we have more sweet basil, that drain next to the growbed is used to grow duckweed, which is used as a high protein tilapia food, Just brilliant another amazing reason that aquaponics is just such a comprehensive plant growing technique...
Here we have kale. I have tried myself growing it in my own commercial aquaponics system that I made however they all seem to suffer an iron deficiency as can be seen here. (Chlorosis) As per wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorosis This I always personally used to fix using Chelated Iron and can be purchased from any nursery or garden centre. Just be sure to check that the brand you buy is fish safe!
The roof of the unit pic taken from inside the hot house. That yellow nasty sticker is used to catch all horrid little bugs, aphids, flies, moths that do damage to the precious crop. Biological pest control is another wonderful natural technique to control pests where you effectively utilize nature to take care of that issue more can be read here as per wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_pest_control
Baby tilapia which were bred in the system. Tilapia are a great fish for commercial aquaponics systems in a warmer climate, cold weather wont work for tilapia at all you would need to use a fish like a trout. More about these little tropical beauties here as per wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozambique_tilapia
The Fish tanks with super oxygenated water and happy fish..
The roof of the system open to release hot air (hot houses get very hot in summer) as well as the plethora of NFT pipes..
Pumpkins and tomatoes growing nicely in the system...
Here experimenting with everything from pumpkins to watercress. Watercress is a bitter small leaved water plant that is high in vitamins and great in salads and predominantly used in eastern cooking..
As per my previous post this is very much of a hybrid system incorporating everything from NFT to DWC in one system as below..
This system was rather cheap to put together as we can see double storey built with CCA treated gumposts for maximum initial price saving setup costs.
Any questions? Do be sure to leave a comment.
Have a super Tuesday.
Cheer$;)
Hey, really beautiful place. Wish you a good continuation !
