My Latest Fruits & Vegetables Market Visit
Welcome back to @progressivechef's page!
It's already Wednesday and I did not get the opportunity to share my latest market visit pics with you yet!
Time is really flying guys!
Well let me show you some pics of last Friday at the market!
As you know it is winter time here in Mauritius and there is actually a great abundance of vegetables for the time being and the price is still quite affordable!
The first one I noticed was the corn which was just at the entrance of the market!
It is actually the last harvest of corns in Mauritius and eventually I bought some pieces!
I love it boiled in salted water and eat with melted butter!
How you like to eat corns?
I shared these with you last time too, these are called 'Anguive' in Mauritius and it got the English name of 'Thai Eggplant'.
This week too there was a lot of these lovely shaped vegetables on the stalls!
It is quite bitter and I love it when dry fried!
Have you ever tasted this vegetable?
It was the first time this year that I saw these custard apples in the market! It is the beginning of the season!
In Mauritius we call it Coeur de Boeuf!
It was at a price of $1.5 one piece!
The local Victoria Pineapple made their appearance too! 3 pineapples for a dollar, well guys it is not everyday you get this price in Mauritius!
It is usually $2 one piece!
A very famous vegetable in Mauritius, Pipegaille can be stewed or cooked in curries!
With the skin you can do delicious chutneys!
The skin is rough and hard but inside it is so soft!
Have you ever seen this one?
It is called Ridge Gourd in English!
These green leaves are called Brede Chouchou here in the local language! It is actually the leaves of Christophinia!
We prepare it either in a broth or stewed with onion and garlic!
So delicious!
This is how you will see eggs at the market in Mauritius! 5 pieces for $1!
In winter egg's price are quite high...maybe the chickens do not lay enough i suppose!
I saw these dry cut coconut and wanted to share it with you guys!
Actually these were commonly used in the past to shine the floor at one's house!
In the past there were no tiles , so people were applying wax on the floor and use this as a brush to shine the floor by applying pressure with your feet and twist!!!
Oh my favorite herb! Curry leaves smell is just amazing!
As i said in my earlier posts, curry leaves are best when fresh!
Do you use it in your cooking?
I will end the post with these lovely white raddish also known as Daikon!
In Mauritius we eat both the white and the green parts!
I love it raw or cooked!
How you enjoy daikon in your country?
So here we are guys, some pics of my latest market visit!
I really hope you enjoyed discovering a little bit more about my country's products!

To us, in Brazil, "Anguive" is very similar with our "Jiló". It's like a mini-eggplant, but more bitter. Pipegaille is completely unknown. Can you tell which botanical family she belongs to? From the chuchu (chouchou) we use only the cooked fruits. Do you use the new sprouts for cooking? I would like to know about it! Thanks for the post !
Actually pipengaille belongs to the cucumber family, it is also called Loofah!
Yes the new sprouts is vastly used here in Mauritius, cut in small pieces and just sauteed with onion and garlic, it's just wow!
Do try it, you'll love it! You can also add it in light soups/broth!
Thanks for stopping by!
thanks for your recipe. I will try !

I think this is one of the most unique food markets I've ever seen! Such cool vegetables! Some of them I haven't even heard of! I would love to try them!
Thanks for sharing!
I really love sharing and discovering awesome vegetables like that! It's really amazing that some of these veggies grows only in some part of the world only! Nature is really amazing!
All that fresh food.... :))
Thanks for stopping by @awesome-seven!
I love your market visit chef! As you know, markets are my favorite thing! Mine is tomorrow and I am already excited! I like your price of pineapple much better than mine! I pay about $2/$4 for one :( But I need my pineapple! I love it so! Mangos are also horribly overpriced. It's almost $3/$4 for one :( Maybe I should move over there! ;)
Have a wonderful weekend! PS... I know you have seen I am judging SCC... so you better make it excellent! I have high expectations for you ;)
Mangoes are so expensive there! Wow! I can start a business of mango! hahaha! During the summer months, fruits are really very cheap here in Mauritius! You should definitely come over!
Oh yes, I've seen that you will be the judge, that adds more stress on my shoulders!!!
Have a lovely weekend you too!
Oh OK so I should come there and bring your fruit over here ;) I am trying to grow my own but these things take time! Hopefully soon =D
I bought 2 mangoes at the market and my heart was just pumping from the amount... CRAZY! It may be that I get taxed for not being local too... I know I pay more for being an 'expat' and that's OK, all part of having this island life ;)
Hahaha don't stress my dear chef, you'll create something amazing I know it!
Hahaha! That 'expat' things happen in Mauritius too!
Once the seller know you are expat...Hmmm your purse will surely suffer! hahahah!
Hahah yes, that is the unfortunate problem I suffer... except from my farmer friends who shower me with love and flowers ;) I may be importing from Mauritius soon!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE custard apples!!! Did you buy some home?? oooh..I wish I could get my hands on one right now! urghh
Oh yes I bought 2 pieces and eat them all that day itself! Hahaha! They were really very tasty! Wish I could share with you!
I'm glad you got double portion to eat my share! hehe
