Florida By Air :: Going Up In A Tiny Plane, Hopefully Not Going Down in Flames

in #florida6 years ago (edited)

Easter dinner at a friend's house brought an unexpected surprise.

The house in question is actually part of a 'flying community' of sorts, where everyone has a hanger and there's a landing strip running right down the middle of the neighborhood.

"Want to take a ride?" I was asked after dinner. "Yes!" I said. I hoped I wouldn't barf. I was full of food.

Beechcraft Sundowner of Doom at the left, my Ford Escape at the right for scale.
So inviting. And tiny.
I really had to wedge myself into the cockpit. I'm a tall guy. The plane is not meant for tall guys.
Always look both ways before you cross the street...with your plane.
Looks like someone else had the same idea today.
Final photo of me and @morodiene. If we don't make it back alive...somebody please feed my cats.
We made it into the air! Everything is so absurdly flat. I knew South Florida was flat, but this was really flat.
Took a swing past our house. We're one of the orange-roofed houses in the middle. I won't say which one because of ... stalkers.
Made it back alive! Just in time to watch the sunset.

All things considered it was fun. I sweated a lot during the flight, and got a bit of vertigo when the pilot banked. A small, cheap airplane like this must be what Spirit Airlines is like.

Sounds like you had a fun time @negativer!

We bought our son a flying lesson for his 18th birthday an I got to sit in the back of a small blane while he flew us to the Isle of Wight and back. Yikes! I had to work really, really, hard no to let my mind get carried away with what could happen. 😊

In the end it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, if somewhat nerve wracking. The views were amazing. 😁

I don't think I could ride in a car from someone taking lessons how to drive; I really don't think I could sit in a plane with a student. (Although I assume there was a professional pilot there, right?)

But yea, I agree; somewhat nerve wracking for me too, in large part because the plane felt so flimsy. And of course I had no parachute :)

Ha, ha, ha! Yes there was a professional pilot there. I'm not completely nuts! 😂

I think I'd sooner be a passenger with a learner pilot that a learner driver. If something goes wrong there's more time for the pro to set things right. I'm basing this on the idea that it takes less time to crash into the ground than it does to drive into a wall. 😂

I just kept looking out the window and telling myself how beautiful it was. Over and over. Actually, when we were inn the air it wasn't so bad it was the take offs and landings that were the scariest! 😁

Ah small planes, always fun. My friend in Australia has one cos, you know, he's rich.

Glad no one died.

Having a plane seems a good idea in case of apocalypse, but otherwise somewhat impractical. And expensive. Probably all of that is par for the course if you're rich though :)

Oh god, @negativer, that feeling when a smaller plane banks absolutely does my head in. I'm ok with the rest of it, even turbulence, but when they tip the wing to one side. My stomach sinks and does a flip.
Sounds like you had fun though and you survived which is always good.

The tipping is the worst, I agree. Especially when there's nothing to grab onto. And I think it's rude to suddenly grab onto the pilots arm or something. :)

I think I would have joined you on the vertigo train ... sea bands might of helped:)Looks like it was a great adventure.

I've heard about sea bands, never tried them. Do they work?

They worked for my morning sickness:)

My sister swears by those things, she wears them before she gets on the plane and doesn't take them off for the whole trip. LOL.
In context though, we were going cruises.
I wonder if green apples and ginger tablets work for motion sickness as they do for sea sickness.

Super fun dude!!! Still quite scary such a small plane right. It doesnt feel like the most stable thing ever hahaha

I know! It feels like a leaf on the breeze.

It was a perfect day for flying! It's a whole different world up in the air.

Yes, it is different, Morodiene, at least that's what my mother told me. She loved flying solo - just her, the plane and the wild blue yonder. That wasn't passed down to me, however.

I don't know that I would do it often since it doesn't seem to be terribly practical, but maybe it's like boating.
