Return To Your WHY

It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about establishing your “why.” But it is SO necessary.

Finding out your own personal reasons behind your desire to make a change is incredibly important, because it reminds you why you’ve chosen to walk your path to a better life - keeping your “why” in the front of your mind is especially useful when things get challenging, or when your motivation drops off.

Getting (and staying) fit and healthy isn’t always easy. It takes time, energy, hard work and sacrifice. It requires making tough decisions, reordering your priorities, and pushing yourself.

If it wasn’t this way, nobody would struggle and everyone would be walking around just as fit, healthy, and happy as can be.

Losing track of WHY you’re making positive changes in your life makes it so much easier to make excuses and deviate from the path that gets you to where you ultimately really want to be.

So when the going gets tough, and it will, return to your “why” - it will usually lead you right back to what’s really important to you, and light your way back onto the road that guides you to success.

The first questions I ask any client who wants to take charge of their health and fitness are:

  • What brought you to this moment?

  • Why do you want to make this change?

  • Why now?

Even if you’re not working with a coach, mentor, or accountability buddy, you can answer these questions for yourself. Think long and hard about your answers, and don’t shy away from your truth.

Sometimes the answers are simple and straightforward, but most of the time they aren’t. Almost all of my clients become emotional when they talk about their why - so if you do too, you’re not alone.

This is NOT a bad thing. Not at all. Having emotion behind your goals just shows how important it is to actually make the changes that are necessary to help you feel better, become physically and mentally stronger, live longer, and be happier.

Even if it tugs on your heart in the moment, embrace it - feel it, acknowledge it, then WRITE IT DOWN. More than once. Writing down your goals and desires (a plan of action helps too) makes them come alive, and helps you commit to making all of it a reality.

Leave yourself “why” notes in places where you’ll see them often. On the fridge, on the dashboard of your car, on your bathroom mirror, or anywhere else that draws your gaze. Every time you see them, read them aloud.

Make your “why” your own personal mantra.

Whatever it is you want to accomplish, you can do it. And this is a great place to start.

such a great reminder. thank you for this. i've had a real rough couple of months, in fact i'm still currently struggling to get back to the "fit" mindset. Thanks for the motivation, as always. ❤

Awww, you're so welcome! It can definitely be tough sometimes, I have had a similar experience recently myself actually... I got a little burned out training for crossfit, and I really needed a change - I decided to take a break from crossfit altogether, only lift weights and try some hot yoga, and I feel super refreshed! Yes, there is WHY behind our action. When we start doing something, we are highly motivated. Later we realize, it is not going to be that easy. If you have a strong WHY, that keeps you motivated and you will do what it takes to get there.
