Can't Get Ripped??

in #fitness7 years ago

Well hello, friends!

I recently had what I thought was a VERY interesting conversation with a fellow “fitness professional.”

This trainer is a big man, both in terms of muscle mass and also carrying a considerable amount of body fat, and he said to me (and a group of mutual acquaintances) that his body type is one that “can never get ripped” no matter what.

All of the other individuals taking part in this conversation are not in the fitness industry, and some of them are actually his clients, and seemed not to bat an eye at this statement as my jaw hit the floor.

While I didn’t want to call him out in front of his clients, it did give me the idea to go ahead and bust this fitness myth WIDE open for all of you guys, because I think it’s definitely worth talking about!

If a trainer or anyone in the fitness world tells you that their body type (or yours) will never get shredded, think again about working with them. I don’t mean to be unkind, but they are unfortunately either grossly misinformed, ignorant, dishonest, or some combination of the three.

While it is correct that every body type comes with its own unique set of challenges when it comes to attaining a lean, muscular physique, no body type is incapable of getting there.

It’s just not true.

In many cases it takes a ton of time, hard work, dedication, planning, training, careful manipulation of many variables, consistency, good decision-making, and willpower to get to that point and stay there, but it’s something that anyone who’s willing to put in the effort can eventually achieve.

If someone has been busting their ass in the gym to either gain muscle, lose fat, or both, and aren’t seeing the results they’re looking for, then something is going wrong - whether it be with nutrition (this alone can be very complex), workout approach, lifestyle choices, sleep… The list goes on. They might feel like they’re working really hard, and maybe they are, but if the plan isn’t quite right then it ends up being a lot of energy spent on the wrong quest.

Building your very best body can take a lot of trial and error, and because every body is unique, what is effective for another person who might appear to be very similar to you may not actually work the same way in your case. This can be frustrating and confusing, but the puzzle IS possible to put together if you stick with it.

Of course there are special outliers like those with medical problems, psychological issues, medications they have to take, etc. that can make changing body composition unusually difficult or even impossible, but this is frankly very unusual - and typically the people who are in those situations and are aware of their legitimate medical road blocks are not same the ones we so often hear complaining about their stubborn physiques.

It’s everyone else, looking for an excuse as to why they haven’t seen results, that are quick to blame body type, genetics, or anything else they can think of other than their own strategy and efforts, for their lack of success.

I personally think that for a lot of people who either hit some type of plateau or have never seen noticeable results at all, they lose hope and motivation - and instead of continuing to tweak their approach, they either decrease their effort due to perceived futility or worse, shut it down altogether. Obviously nobody will ever get ripped doing that!

The hard truth is that anyone who is willing to put in the work and make fitness the foundation of their lifestyle can get the body that they’ve always wanted. It’s just a lot easier to make excuses than to make the necessary sacrifices.

If it were easy, everyone would be walking around lean, toned and sporting a beach-worthy six-pack all year long. But it’s not easy, and sometimes it even sucks, but it’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth it or not.

What I’m saying is don’t let yourself be defeated by this flawed way of thinking - please don’t believe that the body you want is out of your reach because of your body type or anything else.

Don’t ever settle, because you don’t have to. If you want it badly enough, you can have it.

And certainly don’t let your trainer tell you you’re never going to get there! It’s their job to help you achieve your goals, not shoot them down and make you think your aspirations are pointless. To me, that’s just ridiculous.

Furthermore, why would you take investment advice from someone who’s own finances are in shambles? Get what I’m saying? ;)

Anyway, keep the people in your life who believe in you and will stop at nothing to help you achieve whatever goals you set your mind to. Believing is at least half the battle, so start there - and then hurry up and get moving!

As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions or if there’s ever any way I can help you achieve YOUR health, wellness, or fitness goals - I believe in YOU!

Please feel free to comment, upvote, or resteem if you’d like! :)

This is really true. The fact is even if we spend our entire life building our body, our old age shrinking will still be inevitable but it won't be just be as much as the untrained and the fitness will tell in the body. Great post @annemariemay

Thanks @tobah! Glad you agree :) and that's true, old age does affect our bodies but I also believe that if we meet the aging process with fitness and vitality, that it won't ravage us quite so much! ;)

@annemariemay You are so right, when someone tells you that you cannot do something. It is demotivating, especially if you are paying them for training! Gotta go else where, because as you say, the mental battle is the real barrier to overcome hurls to reach your goals. Thank you for reminding me of that!

Thanks @ohboy! I agree completely, and I'm so glad if my post was helpful :) you can do anything you put your mind to!!!

You’re totally right and I see it as well.

I had one friend doing cardio galore and she couldn’t seem to come down in the weight.

I told her to try something new. If it’s not working, why do you continue to do it?

She then went to lifting weights and worked her way up to about two hours a day.

Holy smokes. She was starting to see the results she always wanted.

As they say, every body is different.

Person A might need to put a lot of effort in exercise, while person B has to really focus on their diet.

I love this! "If it’s not working, why do you continue to do it?" - so wise, yet I think sometimes people are fearful of what they haven't yet experienced. You're a good friend to have offered your pal some gentle advice - seems like it's paying off! Cheers, friend! :)
