"SLC21/WK1: Empowering Life-Saving Skills: A Guide to First Response and Basic First Aid
Am thrilled to engage in the first week of season 21 First-aid class everyone is entitled to know how to deliver first aid treatment because in times of emergency a life can be safed.
Share your any experience of your life, in which you faced the emergency that could be handled by your own only if you know the basic first response skills.
I remember back in 2016 an incident took place on my way back from school, the front tire of a motorcycle pulled out causing the rider to loose control falling to the ground caused severe injuries to the man and the lady that was sitting behind him.
Then i had no single idea of how to render any help at the moment, me and two other friends of mine help the man and the woman out of the main road, the man had a deep cut on his arm while the woman sustain so many injuries on her skin and was also breathing heavily. I was terrified and scared at the same time, than man lost so mush blood as a result of bleeding and i had no idea of what to do until help arrived and rushed them to the hospital. I always wished i knew how to perform first aid i would have prevented the man from loosing so mush blood while waiting for help to arrive.
Imagine you are walking back home, when you witness a road traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle, and the motorcyclist is lying on the road, not moving. There’s some bleeding from his leg, and he appears to be unconscious. You being the first responder, how will you manage this scenario?
We live in a world were unforseen occurrence can take place one of which is accident that can leave the casualty vulnerable, let me imagine am on a lonely road or first to witness an accident scene I will quickly take the following actions :
• Danger: what i mean by danger is trying to help the casualty in that same position the accident took place this can put me, the casualty and others at risk, so i will check if the scene is safe then is its not i will move the casualty to a safer place.
• Responds: i would have attended to the bleeding spot but what if the casualty is also choking, so i will ask questions like: can you hear me? If i get a response fine if i dont i will firstly open the mouth to check if there is anything blocking the airway bleeding is also dangerous because too mush lost of blood can weaken the casualty and might cause it life. With a cotton cloth i will apply pressure and tie the bleeding spot to stop the bleeding, then proceed to check heart beat and pulse to see if the is need for CPR.
• Call for help: if the severity of the casualty did not permit me to seek for help at first, i will dial the emergency number and explain the condition of the casualty alongside with the location of the accident scene, after seeking for help i will try to calm the casualty also let him/her lay by the side for a free airway while we wait for medical help.
