The sad reality of the state of our seas

in #ecotrain4 years ago

This is an ECO beach in Borneo with an entrance fee to maintain the beach and clean it regularly but unfortunately it was not maintained. It just shows that it is all an illusion, clean or not clean, plastic pollution in the ocean is huge! We need to do everything we can to reduce reuse recycle. Avoid plastic products as much as you can!

Let me know in the comments below what you do or could do to reduce plastic pollution.

I have traveled to 50+ countries, for me sadly it is not surprising to see a trashed beach, the first time I was really aware of trash being a problem was in India 2013 it was absolutely shocking. Ever since I have tried to be more conscientious of plastic use. Year after year of travelling to new places I would see more and more trash, the problem seemed to be getting worse, seeing this beach wouldn't of been that surprising except it was renowned for its cleanliness! I also couldn't believe that people could actually feel comfortable and happy taking selfies, it all seems so pointless and depressing that people don't seem to care about the hard truth that is in front of them and only think about how to square off that perfect selfie for the gram.

Sort:

yep, india is pretty dire.. at least in the south now single use plastics have been banned,, but not yet water bottles! I think having machines that dispense RO water into reusable bottles in shops would be a GIANT leap for plastic reductions.. this could also be done in the west in supermarkets.. They used to have one in Infinity Foods in Brighton many years ago.. made so much sense!

It is a tragedy, indeed. What I have learned, thought, is that much of the washed up beach litter comes from elsewhere and is brought in by the tides. It's a complex problem, and beach litter changes with weather and tidal-moon patterns too.

HUGE GLOBAL ISSUE.

That's messed up! Good thing you took the time to recycle some! It is astounding how those people just didn't care and went on to taking their pictures, we are living in a strange world.

I know so sad there is still so much work and educating needing to be done

@celestialcow

Thank you for your post. I wonder if both images are realistic. I've seen the "reality" image you've provided, but I've also seen the Instagram image. I believe it boils down to community and corporate living.

One example where the "Instagram" image is reality is concerning Avila Beach, California, and Pismo Beach, California. The community heavily monitors those beaches. There are strict laws against littering, and, if necessary, officials will call upon the citizens for cleanup. California is more environmentally conscious than other places I've lived.

I have also seen where the "reality" image is also correct. There's no excuse for it, but the most likely cause is due to a failure of the community. The community wants the beaches clean, but they also want someone else to push the issue and to clean it up for them. It's just an opinion. I don't know of any problems in publications that provide a direct link.

@scholaris

The beach is suppose to be maintained and cleaned and you pay a fee but there was so much trash i think after the rains it pushed trash into the sea from the dumping trash in the rivers. After all this goes to show maintain or clean the beach doesnt solve the issue at large and that is the source of all the plastic trash in the first place
