Total Solar Eclipse 2017 Coming To My Town

in #eclipse7 years ago

On August 21st, 2017, The Solar Eclipse Will Cover White House, TN

The celestial event known as the Total Solar Eclipse rarely happens in the same location! My town as well as 14 other states are in the path of totality in the middle of the day on August 21, 2017.

What is A Solar Eclipse?

According to NASA:

This celestial event is a solar eclipse in which the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, from beginning to end, as viewed from a given location. For this eclipse, the longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path will be about two minutes and 40 seconds.

On August 21, the moon will block out the sun completely from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina as it crosses the United States. The path of totality is fairly narrow, but those in the path will see total darkness in the middle of the day. For those viewing from outside the path, they will be treated to a partial eclipse.

Make sure you take eye-safety precautions if looking directly into the sun/eclipse or risk damaging your retinas or causing blindness from the UV rays.

What is A Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, directly opposite the sun.

From Space.com

A lunar eclipse can occur only at full moon. A total lunar eclipse can happen only when the sun, Earth and moon are perfectly lined up.

During a lunar eclipse the Earth is between the Sun and Moon, creating a shadow and darkening the surface of the moon. The glow we see from the moon comes from reflecting sunlight off the surface.

Exclusive Footage From My Backyard!

My house is right in the path of the eclipse, according to this map from Nasa.gov that I overlayed with a map of White House, TN from Google Maps. The red dot indicates my location – right between Portland and Hendersonville.

I will be recording the event with my digital camera to post on Steemit and my blog. There are several TV stations offering live coverage of the event as well.

According to the Weather Channel, the sky should be clear for the Solar Eclipse, scheduled around 1:30PM CDT (local time).

Are You Going To See the Eclipse?

You can visit the NASA eclipse website to see the full path of the solar eclipse. I’d love to have more references to link in my coverage so people can read about it from different locations and perspectives. Let me know in the comments if you’ll be in viewing range and plan to record the event.

Sweet man I actually just left Boise ID where they are getting it full 100% lol and where I want to move Greenville SC will also be getting 100% but im not moved yet! Up here in PA we are getting about 80%-65% but I have no glasses to view it ugh the struggles lol

I used to live in Michigan, don't miss the weather up North lol.

I think the Science channel and Weather channel are both broadcasting the event live at least. I plan to record it on TV and probably just watch through the viewfinder of my camera when it happens. :)

The traffic is already getting pretty heavy too. Good revenue for this small town at least.

yeah I was thinking about just going outside and pointing my video camera up there and seeing if it records anything haha Boise said they are getting some 100k people visiting and everything is sold out totally unreal!

You should. I know Nashville is capitalizing on the event pretty big too. Travel will be hectic on Monday.

You are so lucky to be able to experience it @tunnelrat! It's not visible in my country!
Hope you'll have a great time!
I found you via MAP13 post!
Thank you!

Thanks, @progressivechef. It was a fleeting but memorable experience.

My updated post about the even is here. Appreciate you stopping by.

You've exceeded my expectations.

We're neighbors! Sort of. I'm over in Hermitage, not quite as "ground zero" as you, but still in the path of totality for tomorrow.

My workplace provided glasses for us all yesterday. I hope they gave us legit ones and not some of the scam ones that will make you go blind.

I'll be trying to get some images from the event too, though I haven't really checked out how to do it, and all I have for a camera is my Samsung S7.

NASA will be streaming it on their FB page as well, in 360 degree coverage, whatever that means.

Have a great time with it! Let's hope the sky stays clear for us!

Well hello, neighbor! My brother used to live there. The home of President Andrew Jackson!

Didn't acquire any of the special glasses for myself nor my camera. Just going to wing it. Even if the camera gets damaged, it'll have captured a very special event.

Also have the DVR set to record the Science channel's live coverage just in case.

We'll have to have a steemit get together offline sometime, @lukestokes is in Nashville so he's close too.

I looked at your article, expecting to see the moon was moving West to East in the path of the sun. You describe the black star but nowhere do you correlate the invisible sun with the eclipse. Clearly the black dot in the middle was the moon.

Interesting approach though.

its mean it will come tomorrow?
please follow me @waldan

Yes, @waldan. The solar eclipse comes tomorrow. NASA has a page dedicated to it. 14 hours 49 minutes from now.
