DIY Bulletproof Coffee!!!

Hey guys today I am going to do a quick DIY post for Bulletproof Coffee. In case you haven't heard of bulletproof coffee, it is a fatty coffee that can be used to start the day right. It will give you an instant energy boost and help with mental clarity. It also tastes great. The idea is to only drink the bulletproof coffee. That is your meal until lunch time. Lets get to it...

I personally like to keep my coffee beans whole and I will only grind them just prior to using them. This helps prevent oxidation and helps retain the full nutritional benefits and flavor of the coffee bean. I also enjoy using a French Press. When using a French Press, you will want to grind your coffee bean to a coarse finish. If you are using a drip coffee machine then you will want a medium grind finish. For Espresso use a fine grind finish. I am using the Lido hand crank grind. This grind gives me the ideal coarse setting that I am looking for and I get a small arm workout.

When brewing coffee, temperature plays an important role. You don't want the water to be boiling...that is too hot. It will release bitter tannins from your coffee bean, leaving a harsh cup of coffee. I aim for around 200 degree Fahrenheit for my coffee brewing. I will also add a dash of cinnamon for its health benefits to brew along with my coffee. In the French Press I brew for 4 minutes. If you brew longer, the coffee will become a bit more harsh and stronger in flavor.

Quick Bonus notes for Cinnamon health benefits:

Cinnamon can slow the speed at which the stomach empties following a meal, which can help control sharp rises and falls in blood sugar levels. Softening these sugar spikes can help reduce cravings.
Cinnamon enhances the way antioxidants from other foods help the body defend itself, strengthening the immune system.
Cinnamon can help in relieving congestion, reducing stiffness in muscles and joints, counteracting inflammation, supporting digestive health, and even boosting brain function. This super spice has also been shown to stimulate good circulation with its blood-thinning properties.

For my bulletproof coffee I used Ceylon Cinnamon which is a little different than Cassia Cinnamon (most commonly found in US supermarkets). Perhaps I will do a post on the difference between the two...

Here are two very important ingredients. You want to use high quality fats for your bulletproof coffee. I like the Kerrygold Irish Grass Fed Butter Unsalted. Grass fed butter is much healthier than conventional farmed butter. I used 2 Tablespoons for this recipe. You can also use Ghee as well. Just make sure it is GRASS FED!

The second fat used is MCT Oil derived from Coconuts. MCT oil acts differently in the body compared to other fats. When Medium Chain Triglycerides are absorbed into the blood stream, they bypass the digestion process that longer chain fats go through. MCT's provide quick energy for the body and are thus less likely to be stored in the fat cells. Further, when a meal includes medium chain triglycerides, there is a significant increase in the number of calories burned (thermogenic effect).

If you do not have MCT oil, cold-pressed virgin coconut oil could be used. I used 1 Tablespoon of MCT oil in my recipe.

Next you are going to want to add all of the ingredients into your blender. Blending all of the ingredients will give you a hot, frothy cup of deliciousness. You are not going to get the same results by mixing with your spoon and hand. You want all the ingredients to really mix together. I blended my bulletproof on high for about 30-40 seconds.

Once you get that frothy consistency, you are ready to enjoy a fantastic cup of coffee. Pour one cup to drink immediately and put the rest in a thermos to keep it hot. That's all. Now you can easily enjoy your own cup of Bulletproof in under 10 minutes. Feel free to add additional ingredients to your liking. Sometimes I will use Cacao Powder to give a chocolatey flavor. The important thing is to NOT USE SUGAR. You want your energy to come from the high quality fats.
