Boohoo - it's Halloween again. Some celebrate huge parties, others like to sweep it under the table.

Where does this celebration come from and since when are we celebrating it here in Europe?

Halloween was originally celebrated only in Catholic areas of the British Isles, especially in Ireland, while the Anglican Church celebrated the Reformation the day before All Saints Day. With the numerous Irish emigrants in the 19th century it came to the United States and belonged to the customs of this ethnic group. Due to its attractiveness, it was soon adopted by the others and became an important folk festival in the United States and Canada.

Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition. It began as a Celtic end-of-summer festival during which people felt especially close to deceased relatives and friends. For these friendly spirits, they set places at the dinner table, left treats on doorsteps and along the side of the road and lit candles to help loved ones find their way back to the spirit world.

Today’s Halloween ghosts are often depicted as more fearsome and malevolent, and our customs and superstitions are scarier too. We avoid crossing paths with black cats, afraid that they might bring us bad luck. This idea has its roots in the Middle Ages, when many people believed that witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats.

Aber woher kommt dieses Fest und seit wann feiern wir es hier in Europa?

Halloween wurde ursprünglich nur in katholischen Gebieten der britischen Inseln, insbesondere in Irland, gefeiert, während die anglikanische Kirche am Tag vor Allerheiligen die Reformation feierte. Mit den zahlreichen irischen Auswanderern im 19. Jahrhundert kam es in die USA und gehörte zu den Sitten dieser Volksgruppe. Aufgrund seiner Attraktivität wurde es bald von den anderen übernommen und entwickelte sich zu einem wichtigen Volksfest in den USA und Kanada.

Halloween war schon immer ein Feiertag voller Geheimnisse, Magie und Aberglauben. Es begann als keltisches Sommerendfest, bei dem sich die Menschen verstorbenen Verwandten und Freunden besonders nahe fühlten. Für diese freundlichen Geister hielten sie Plätze am Esstisch frei, ließen Leckereien vor der Haustür und am Straßenrand liegen und zündeten Kerzen an, um den Angehörigen zu helfen, ihren Weg zurück in die Geisterwelt zu finden.

Die heutigen Halloween-Geister werden oft als furchterregender und bösartiger dargestellt, und auch unsere Bräuche und unser Aberglaube sind erschreckender. Wir vermeiden es, Wege mit schwarzen Katzen zu kreuzen, weil wir befürchten, dass sie uns Unglück bringen könnten. Diese Idee hat ihre Wurzeln im Mittelalter, als viele Leute glaubten, dass Hexen der Entdeckung entgehen könnten, indem sie sich in schwarze Katzen verwandelten.

The custom of setting up pumpkins for the Halloween festival comes from Ireland. A Legend tells that the villain Jack Oldfield lived there. He caught the devil with a cunning and only wanted to release him if he would not get in the way of Jack O anymore. After Jack's death, he did not go to heaven because of his actions, but of course Jack was not allowed to go to hell neighter, because he had betrayed the devil.

But the devil had pity and gave him a turnip and a glowing coal so Jack could wander through the darkness. The source of the illuminated pumpkin was therefore a lighted turnip, but with large quantities of pumpkins available in the United States, one squashed a pumpkin instead. This pumpkin has since been known as Jack O'Lantern. To scare off evil spirits, we cut grimaces into pumpkins, which illuminated the yard in front of the house.

The most well-known tradition in North America is that children go from house to house and call "trick or treat" to ask the residents to give them To give sweets because they play tricks on them otherwise. When living in Mexico we always celebrated the "Dia de los muertos", which is a whole other dimension and origin but still. - This year it was on!! I was really motivated to celebrate Halloween, so we planned it all out.

Eigentlich war die Idee des beleuchteten Kürbises daher eine beleuchtete Rübe, aber mit einer großen Menge Kürbisse, die in den Vereinigten Staaten erhältlich waren, wurde stattdessen ein Kürbis ausgehöhlt. Dieser Kürbis ist seitdem als Jack O'Lantern bekannt. Um böse Geister abzuschrecken, schneiden wir Grimassen in Kürbisse, die den Hof vor dem Haus erhellen.

Die bekannteste Tradition in Nordamerika ist, dass Kinder von Haus zu Haus gehen und "Süßes oder Saures" verlangen, um die Bewohner zu bitten, ihnen Süßigkeiten zu geben, weil sie ihnen sonst einen Streich spielen. Verkleiden ist sehr beliebt an Halloween. Kinder und Erwachsene verkleiden sich als Feen, Fledermäuse, Geister, Hexen, Kürbisse, Skelette, Zombies, Tote und Vampire. Typische Halloween-Farben sind schwarz, orange, grau, weiß, gelb und rot.

Als ich noch klein war, haben wir diesen Feiertag hier in Deutschland noch nicht allzu sehr gefeiert, aber natürlich kannte ich das Konzept aus amerikanische Serien im Fernsehen. Als ich in Mexiko lebte, feierten wir immer den "Dia de los muertos", der aber noch eine ganz andere Dimension und Herkunft hat. - Dieses Jahr war es also soweit !! Ich war wirklich motiviert, auch hier Halloween zu feiern, also haben wir alles geplant.

La costumbre de preparar calabazas para el festival de Halloween proviene de Irlanda. Una leyenda cuenta que el villano Jack Oldfield vivió allí. For decoration we have tons of fake spider nets, little spiders, bottles sprayed in black and covered with red wax, plates and glases for Halloween, candels and a little witch made out of plastic.

Of course we also had to dress up accordingly before our guests arrived. As I am already a bit in Asia mood, I just put out my dress from Nepal and put some blood on my face. My girlfriend went for zombie. But we have all kind of draculas, vampires, ghosts, witches etc. as guests at our party as well.

Natürlich mussten wir uns auch entsprechend verkleiden, bevor unsere Gäste ankamen. Da ich schon ein bisschen in Asien Stimmung bin, entschloss ich mich einfach mein Kleid aus Nepal auszupacken und schmierte mir etwas Blut ins Gesicht. Meine Freundin hat sich für die Zombieversion entschieden. Aber wir haben auch alle möglichen Draculas, Vampire, Geister, Hexen usw. als Gäste auf unserer Party.

Por supuesto, también tuvimos que disfrazarnos bien antes de que llegaran nuestros invitados. Como ya estoy un poco de humor de Asia, saqué mi vestido de Nepal y me puse un poco de sangre en la cara.
