OH my goodness! Haha, I know the drama of a broody hen well...
They are so funny, and so angry. At least she was smarter than some of mine about it. I have a couple that get so upset at every little thing that they end up stepping on and breaking some of their own eggs. Silly birds!
Cool solution with loaning her. I agree wholeheartedly that hen-raised it best. They definitely come out smarter and better able to handle being in an actual flock.
Looking forward to the continuation! ♥
Oh I love it when they stick out all over! They want to be warm, but they don't want to miss anything!
She looks just like my Velvet! A Copper Maran? And her chicks look like something else - Lavender Orps?
She is an Australorpe, which make wonderful mothers, by the way.
She has an assortment of barnyard mix chicks, and one chick from Tractor Supply, a little polish puff ball head. You can see him peeking out under her chin. ♥ Now that I think about it, that chick in the bottom right was also probably a bantam. She took them in with her own chicks.
Oh adorable! She looks JUST like one of mine though, that I always thought was a Copper Maran, although she, and her sister, had no copper at all on them. I wonder if she's really a lorp now.
Its quite possible!! Im no expert with marans, but the ones Ive seen have all had some brown or copper to them, not just straight black.
I love the australorps. they are so sweet and gentle, good mothers, and reliable layers. One of my favorite breeds!
Straight black, but with green and purple irridescence, and a rose comb, right? I lost my favorite hen, Inky, who was Velvet's twin, and she was remarkable sweet, huggy. They weren't like Cleopatra, my copper maran at all. Maybe I have their lineage all wrong.
Exactly like that! Haha it is possible!
Sorry you lost your favorite hen though. Some of them are just irreplaceable. :(
First timers can be crazy! Second timers are all chill and confident - I got this
