Ong.Social?? - First Impressions
I just stumbled across a site called ong.social today, and I'm confused. I was watching Crypto Daily, one of my favorite up and coming youtubers on the subject of cryptocurrency and he talked about this site. He predicted that it may be poised to be bigger than steemit. Upon signing up for the site, I was a little overwhelmed. There was a downloadable instruction manual, but who has the time to read all of that. So when I found a few Youtube videos I was happy to watch those and learn a bit more. From my understanding, it's a platform to post your content to multiple social media sites while earning ad revenue when someone clicks on your post. There are ads on the sides of your profile and blogs so anytime someone visits your page or happens to click on an ad, you receive a portion of the profit. The picture below is a screen shot of my profile, albeit not very clear, but you can see the ad on the top of the profile, and the three on the side. You can pick what ads you want to run in those spaces. I believe the default is ads that will make the most money, but if you have a niche you can pick the ads you want to run.
Upon signing up I received a notification that I could receive 10% of my ad revenue and I could create a new group. I'm not entirely sure what the group thing is about. I was a little turned off that some of the articles I found seemed like click-bait. I do like that the site enables you to put some of your earnings towards charity, though.
It is still in beta, so I understand the site isn't fully there yet. I feel like there's got to be some type of ranking up system because 10% of the ad revenue doesn't seem like a lot. When I clicked a link about upgrading to 80% of the ad revenue, the site gave me a 404 error. So there are obviously still some glitches with the site.
Another thing I found a bit sketchy was that when I clicked payout information, it asked me for my tax information, address, bank information. That rubbed me the wrong way. It could be for donating to charity if someone wants to write it off on their taxes? It wasn't entirely clear to me though, so I can't be sure.
The site also says it has hundreds of thousands of users, but I had a hard time figuring out how to find trending posts, categories, etc. It feels like the site is just to post to other social media sites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc. I feel like if it's really trying to make a go at being one of the big social media sites, it needs to be a little more user friendly. The site as it is right now is pretty complex for a new user and I was overwhelmed.
My overall first impressions of the site were that it was confusing, I didn't understand the entire purpose of the site besides posting to multiple platforms from one location, and that it still has work to be done.
In the future, if the site becomes more stable, user friendly, and has a purpose I would be more apt to try it out again. As glitchy as it is right now though, I wouldn't feel confident that I would receive my payouts (this is purely on my observations of the site as it is right now).
Do you use ong.social? If so, what have you found it to be about? Let me know in the comments!
It is meant to be an analytics engine to make users able to utilize social media better, as well as function as a social media platform on its own. If you are looking at it like a "facebook" you will miss the point. It is more like a hootsuite on steroids.
also, the company has been around since 2014, and people in crypto are just now getting hip to it because they decided to add blockchain technology to their platform and decentralize their databases.
