100 Burpee Challenge

in #contest7 years ago

“I Love Burpees…Said No One Ever!”

This phrase can be found on t-shirts and memes the world over. I was in full agreement with this sentiment, until I completed the 100 Burpee Challenge. Strange, I know, let me explain:

What Is It?

The Challenge is to complete 100 Burpees as fast as possible, as a test of your cardiovascular endurance, muscular stamina and mental toughness.

A Burpee?

What I am calling a Burpee is technically a “Flopee”, as a Burpee requires a strict push-up and a Flopee does not.

  • Place hands on the ground
  • Jump or step feet out into plank position
  • Lie down on the ground
  • Push back up to plank
  • Jump or step feet back toward the hands
  • Stand up, jump up, clap overhead
  • Repeat

Why Is This Movement Important?

Functional Fitness is a buzz-word in the fitness community. A functional movement is one that applies to everyday life (it is also a multi-joint movement). How does a Burpee matter in your life? What if you fall down? Can you get back up? That's the importance of a Burpee. As we age, the risk of falling increases. You want to maintain the ability to get back up as long as possible. That's functional fitness.

The Challenge

Here's what you've been waiting for! I'm challenging our Steemit Community to complete the 100 Burpee Challenge for the benefit of testing your baseline fitness and as a way to improve your endurance and stamina. As if that's not incentive enough, I'll award a random Challenger 50% of the SBD from this post once it is paid out.

To enter:

  • Complete the 100 Burpee Challenge and time yourself!
  • Comment on this post with your completion time
  • Upvote this post to increase the reward pool
  • Re-steem this post to increase visibility of and participation in this Challenge

After payout, I will use pick.esteem.ws to randomly select the winning comment from a Challenger and transfer 50% of the SBD from this post to their wallet.

Are You Crazy?!?!

Hold up! Stay with me here. I realize this may sound crazy to most people. But, this is a great way to get a baseline test of your fitness. You repeat this Challenge, periodically, and thereby measure how much you've improved your aerobic capacity and stamina. The added benefit is that once you do 100 Burpees, a handful of burpees in a workout feels like a breeze, hereafter, and is the reason I no longer agree with that opening quote about loathing Burpees.

100 Not Happening

No problem. 100 IS a lot! If you haven't been working out, 100 is NOT a good place to start. However, that does not mean you're excluded from this Challenge. Do as many as you can do or accumulate 100 over the week and record that in the comments. You'll still be included in the contest. My goal is to get people moving, work within your abilities, challenge you a little bit, and inspire our Community to work together toward improved health and fitness.

Never Too Old

And don't think this is only for the young ones. I'm 42 years old, but that's nothing compared to the countless videos an internet search will reveal of much older people doing burpees. I just watched a video yesterday of a 92 year old woman doing burpees with her trainer. No excuses, but do get the approval from your doctor before starting any exercise regiment.

My results are below:

I beat my brother @knappyhead2001 by 10 seconds, he is 16 and I am 15, proud of Myself, hopefully I become more in shape, i was dying after this, but I got 7:07 :):):):)

Congrats! You did well!

OMG! You were awesome! I love to see young people investing in their health and fitness, creating life-long habits at an early age!

@arbitrarykittenjr I tried to mention you in my Results post for this challenge but it wasn't linking you for some reason, sorry that I didn't get your profile link in there. But, great job on the challenge!

I see what I did not, I was misspelling kittn. Sorry :( I'm trying to talk my teenagers 15 and 13 into getting on Steemit. Curious as to what motivated you to do it? And how do you like it? Any advice?

My son and fellow Steemian @knappyhead2001 just did the Burpee challenge.

I just found your post in Discord a few minutes ago and he rushed to complete it. I am posting this here for him because it's last minute and he cannot find his password in time :) His time is 7:17 and he documented on YouTube

He missed filming the last 15 because his camera shut off, but hopefully we made it in time!

Thanks for this awesome challenge!

Congrats to knappyhead2001, that was a fast time

Way to go @knappyhead2001. Strong work! Impressive results from you and your brother. And I LOVE the video! What kind of sports do you guys play?

You signed up for the Crossfit Open? There probably be burpees. Crossfit is the Freemasonry of Fitness!

I think we can back on burpees in the Open. Lol. Did a workout today with 84 bar-facing burpees in prep for the Open. You CrossFit? Are you going to join us in this Challenge?

@vmirag I never heard of you are joining us? Come on, you know you want to :) Less than 2 days to go.

I've done several 100 burpee challenges. The fun one is the 100 day one where on the 100 day you do 100. My first year volunteering at The Crossfit Games I was doing it soI got a few people to join me in idoing burpees with me. So thanks for the invite...I'll pass.

Ok, THAT challenge sounds like a killer for sho! You volunteered at the Games??? Cool

I bet most others do too, but My CrossFit box has members do birthday burpees, one for each year on their bday, so that was 53 last time. I’ve often said to people that it would be more fair if it was 100-minus-age so the youngsters did more and us old farts do less each year. I will go for 100 this week.

That's awesome @jeffernst! Way to be an inspiration at 53! Glad to have you join us!

How's it going @jeffernst? Have you done 100? Less than two days left; you can't do this! Just commit!

Ok that was totally supposed to say, "you CAN do this!"

I may have missed the challenge deadline but on Friday I did my 100 burpees. It took me almost 11 minutes because I paced myself.

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

Thank you so much! I'm honored and grateful that more people will be inspired to health and fitness by the exposure you're providing!

@coachjj, I am glad you are helping fellow Steemians focus on healthy living. I am almost did not open this article because of how unhealthy I feel.

But pushed through the shame and am going to give the challenge a try.

I'm happy you pushed through @sumatrante. There's no shame. We all start somewhere. And you can start here. I'll be looking for your comment ;) And, if you ever have a question or you need some encouragement, reach out, I'm willing to help.

@sumatranate I'm eager to hear how the 💯 Burpee Challenge is going for you? Less than 2 days to go; you can do this!

Thanks for the encouragement. Unfortunately, I have been sick off and on the last week. Not sure I will make it to the end, but if I am feeling better I will try.

I'm definitely going to give this a try. Do ya need videos as proof :). I just did pushups this morning but these sound more complete, I should just replace pushups with this. (replaces pushups and squats?)

I'd LOVE to see video or pics because it's so much more tangible and fun, but it's not required. I'm trusting you :) And, in a way, it kinda does incorporate a squat and a push-up plus gives you some cardio work. I can't wait to see how it goes for you!

Lol. I tried to do it this morning to replace.. I got up until 50 and that's with breaks. So I give up for today :). Also I was doing a regular pushup so maybe that had to do with it as well!

How did it go @eonwarped with the burpees with no strict push-up? Less than 2 days left. You can do this!

I'll try again tomorrow. I still make it to 50 but I think i could keep going with breaks and do it in an hour or something hehe... Will let you know. Thanks for reminding!

Alright, I got up to 100, with some breaks. My time is 27:13.

I think I took like an extended 5 minute break after 70 (don't remember timing at that point). It was too much. After my break I found the joint near my shoulder was feeling sore already. Then I switched the way I was pushing myself up towards the end which helped me get through the last 30.

Strange, I would have thought it was the cardio that was killing me (and it certainly was), but this was killing my upper arms (shoulder?) pretty fast.

Whew. Cheers. Your time is crazy :). I'll probably keep doing these though, I feel pretty good afterwards.

Yeah, including the regular push-up makes it MUCH harder. The version we're doing, without the strict push-up, allows you to get a little more of a cardiovascular response because you can stay moving longer. Don't think of it as "giving up", it was just a trial run :) You can do this! And if you really can't, then just do the best you can.

Love this! Considering giving it a try. My burpees will probably have to be pretty slow/restricted, but I might be able to make it happen over the course of the week. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Please join us! It doesn't matter where you start, just start today with a set of 10, slow and easy. As you gain confidence, increase it over time. You'll feel great that you accomplished a goal :)

How it been going? Have you been able to chip away at these? Less than 2 days left. Even if you haven't started, you can still make it; just set a timer on your phone every 1-2 hrs to do a set.

Not so good unfortunatly. Injury has been acting up this week so I've been trying to just take it easy. Maybe next time, but thanks for the encouragment. 😊

Wow, brilliant idea! Get these steemit users off their computer and on the floor! lol, 100 is a crazy number, but why not, right!

That's right! Sometimes, a crazy number is the inspiration you need to get ya going. You gonna join us?

I’m going to hit the gym tomorrow and start working on this number! You got me motivated

Good deal! Can't wait to see hear about it :)

Alright checking in. 20 burpees completed today!

way to go, kubbyelizabeth. You inspired me.

Woot! Woot! Way to go! I'm proud of you; keep it up! You're inspiring others!

I skipped today, but tomorrow I am back at the gym. Only 80 more burpees to go.

How'd it go today with the remaining burpees?

I think I'll have to do this. Maybe I can get some friends at the gym to suffer alongside me.

Oh yay! This makes me so happy! And that you're spreading the misery, uh I mean love, to your friends is even better! It would be super cool too get a pic of you guys "suffering" together :)

We're you able to get some friends from the gym to join you? Less than 2 days left!

I do have friends who want to join me but I have that tear in my tendon and am actually not cleared for Burpees. Maybe I will just cheer people on!
