I remember early on reading about Brittney Griner's detention in Russia and how a lot of people involved including the family were trying to resolve the problem quietly, and not turn it into a big political and social media fiasco.

Now that it's trending again, I'm seeing basically every conservative commenter I know gleefully celebrate her arrest and incarceration and just be lowest-common-denominator right wing shitty about it, I definitely understand where they were coming from.

JFC can we please go back to a time where being an American conservative meant literally anything other than just being as shitty and bigoted and mean-spirited as you can 100% of the time?

Bigotry is the only way conservatives know how to flex, because triggering liberals (and high-fiving each other for triggering liberals) is the only currency they value.
