Love and loathe about steemit

in #blog7 years ago

So I have been on this community for about a week now and I am starting to form an opinion of this place. My feelings are very mixed so I thought I would write a bit about the aspects that I love and the other aspects that I do not. I would love to hear others opinion on the topic or if some of my thoughts are just me. I'm going to frame this as a complement sandwich: Nice bread, bad meat, nice bread.

What I Love:

  1. I love the people that comment. Everyone is so supportive and kind. Every post have had has been that they like or love what I have put up. It makes you feel so warm inside to see. I have never really posted on other forms as I never wanted to open myself up to be hated on. I guess that this might change if you had thousands of follows though but for now I am feeling the love.
  2. The rewards system. Realizing that you have in my case a very small coin to throw into someone else's hat makes me feel like I am donating to the worthy causes. It also means that I only give them out sparingly. I usually like to give it to the other small fish in the sea because I know how they feel.

What I Dislike:

Now I know I said loathe in the title but that is a too strong of a word for this post. So here is what I dislike

  1. The 'follow for a follow' and the 'like for a like' posts. This is unproductive and annoying. Here I was excited that someone left a comment and then its just this.
  2. Realizing how hard it is to grow from a small fish in a big ocean. For the first few posts I though that this can't be that hard. I have some cool photos and surely there are some people who would like to hear what I have to say. I soon realized that most of the time it is either luck, boobs or targeted posts that do well. Since I refuse to use boobs to take the fast track it looks like the slow climb for me.
  3. I though that people were using this place to post original things: photos you took, or pictures you drew or things that you did. Turns out there is a lot of copy paste ningas on here. I guess you can't get away from people looking for a quick ride to the top.
  4. The image tag formatting. I am just not use to it yet but I guess I am getting better.
  5. Lastly for the bad that feeling you get when you spend effort on something and no one even looks at it. I know it is the same no matter which platform you post on but on here it is so quickly at the bottom of the pile that no one will ever look at it again.

Again for the Good

  1. How you post. I love the Markdown style of typing posts and the preview that is available. You can really put effort into making your posts look pretty.
  2. Talking to people from different walks of life. People I have never and will never meet coming together to share a similar interests and give positive advise. This truly is a unique platform.
  3. I wanted to make the number of good equal the number of bad but I am struggling to get to 5 unique positives. So instead I will say this, despite the downfalls I think I will keep trying. Even if I stop posting and instead comment/up-vote, I will be keeping the positive atmosphere going and that is what steemit is about.

So that was my thoughts, what are yours?

Sort:

I think your experiences on here reflect those of many who have joined recently.

If you're not a friend with a whale, it's a hard slog getting recognised and rewarded for good work.

I TOTALLY agree on the 'post for a post' quid-pro-quo attitudes of some of the people on here who are hell bent on climbing the greasy pole to popularity and content be damned but for the ones who genuinely put effort into their work only for it to evaporate in a deluge of newer posts can be disheartening.

I'd recommend looking seriously at the curation side of things to keep involved and build up a following of like minded people who will be your 'first port of call' audience for any new blogs you post and hopefully if they like what you write it'll be resteemed to a wider audience.

That is defiantly a possibility. I do enjoy scrolling, reading and generally procrastinating on here as well. The snowball effect is were you want to go.

The counterbalance to the boobs thing is that there's no private messaging, which means no unsolicited dick picks!

Here's to the slow climb! Cheers!

That is a positive

Dont follow for follow, its pointless, unless you are a pro writer who can write content that will engage a million people, having a big list of followers that never care about what you write is pointless. I have 258 followers, Ive been here for over a year, Im happy, I can write a peice that they care about and get a reasonable payout considering my skill as a writer.

If you find copied content, downvote (flag) it yourself or if you arent confident doing it, report them to the steemcleaners who will flag the posts, make an account on steemit.chat and use the steemcleaners-linkdrop

Shame about the boobs though (kidding!).

Haha :) . The 'that they care about' is probably the hard part for myself. Currently I just post anything that comes to mind because I don't know what type of blogger (do you call ourselves this?) I am.

I guess the seeing a lot of copy content it is partly my fault. I like looking at the new of everything page. It is a mix of everything and because I am still new I don't have a very good feed yet.

Keep looking in new and voting/commenting on posts, it's a great way to earn curation and comment rewards as well as finding like minded people to follow, it's how I found you :)

It's a slow grow for many. I have worked pretty hard at it for just over a week and made just over $100.

Focus on quality, a bit of humor, and thoughtful responses. The quality following will grow with you as you share your insights.

I have written and commented a lot about growing on Steem over the last few days. Feel free to take a look at my blogs and comments to see how I've worked to bring value to the community.

I spend a lot of time talking about finding your passion. My passion is helping others (so I can talk forever about it). Find yours and you will grow into a big fish more quickly!

Waw you have done well for yourself in such a short time. I think you may be on the money with the quality comments and posts. Having a look at your content you also like to resteem too, it's like a free hug!

I do resteem when I feel I and my followers will gain value from the resteemed content. I also tend to mention people who have helped me along the way, or link to other useful content when I engage in conversation.

I am also here for a week and have many similar feelings...I have gone through the follow me I follow you, vote for a vote phase and am realizing building quality over quantity and being consistent and genuine is key :) It sucks when you pour your heart out and it falls on deaf ears! I find I get most traction when I focus on things that I am passionate about by seeking out and engaging with people that are posting on subjects that interest me :) Great post!
