I’d think the larger monitor was better for you than a smaller one, Kevin 🧐 I notice I get headachey with iPhone (eyephone) & am vowing to spend more desktop time w/large monitor 👀

But, of course, distance from screen matters, time you spend, posture, lighting, etc... Heck, maybe, it is the wall color that’s gnawing at your soul 🤣

Apparently, Oscar Wilde’s last words as he lay bedridden were:

"This wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One of us has got to go."

I think the green wall and computer fan ain't working out.. lol

Give 'em up, man, before they do you in! :p On a slightly more serious note, scheduling an appointment with an eye doctor myself, due to a headache on the left side of my face that won't let up, for weeks... Damned computers, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em :o

Wishing you well-being, Kevin, all ways _/|_

I used to be okay being on the monitor 24/7, but naturally I guess it gets worse with age. It ain't like it used to be anymore. Cheers man :)

I miss reading, book reading, 24/7, like a person possessed—until I became one with the book... But, at 44 years old, I don’t have that laser focus or the time.

Oh well, we lose some powers and gain others. Sweet dreams, my friend 😴 💤

don't mind, it's not like we ever ask "why the upvote"

Good point 👌🏼 I will adopt this elevated attitude from now on. Sweet dreams 🌙

I was going bigger until arriving at 32". I started feeling at home. the only upgrade would now be a ultra wide but unless it doesn't have the height of a 16:9 screen, a normal 32" is where i feel best at. I might get 2 more of those though :D

ultra wide looked weird to me, but apparently it has benefits for reducing eye strain as mentioned in one of the comments above!

Have you tried using f.lux? It's a total lifesaver when working long nights, or when your eyes just need some rest after staring at a screen too long.

Also, if you're in the market for a monitor, I highly recommend an ultrawide display, it really helps with productivity!

Flux is cool but annoying as hell for gamers and a pain in the ass sometimes.

Perhaps the stuff about low light indoors harming eyesight is only part of a correlation for why people have bad vision, there was a scientific paper that discovered that exposure to sunlight made the eyes stop growing outwards.

So get some sunlight so your eyes stop trying to find the sun like a pair of weird potatoes sprouting out of your face.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/19/well/live/for-better-vision-let-the-sunshine-in.html

Too lazy right now to find another article I read on the subject.

Don't get too much direct sunlight in your eyes and get UV damaged.

And get some sleep, your sleep cycle is probably shit right now if you've been trying to sleep in a room full of electronics and you're up late with anxious thoughts and paranoid fantasies.

I can well understand that. I don't want to miss my "LG 34-UC88" curved monitor anymore. Here some "gearporn" from my studio.

ajp-gearporn.jpg

Better a large monitor than 2 small monitors, where you always look at the edges when you place them in a central position. With this you have a very comfortable working environment. No excessive eye strain. And always put everything on night view. My Cubase is also set to dark.

Ah shame, didn't know there are such benefits using this type of monitor! Got myself a standard one instead..

I had to get used to the Curved Panel first. But it's really nice to work with it. The monitor is especially long and not so high. It's not like that on the neck. When I surf the net, I do not open the browser window as a full screen. I use only half of it and then position the window in the middle. It's like I have a small screen. But with the music software you need and you have a great overview.

P. S. Thank you very much for your generous upvote!

@kevinwong are you kidding me???? So what are you going to do with this one? The feeling can never be the same if you get a smaller display screen. If it's really affecting your eyes like you say, why not get Dark shades for it or put a screen protector to reduce the amount of light getting into your eyes from the screen .

I am really interested in knowing what you wana do with this display screen if you get another one .

I'll probably hand it over to an orphanage nearby.. once I manage to find the remote control

Hahahahahhahahaha you don't even know where the control is...you funny man. Well giving it to The orphanage is a very good idea. Where I stay we are fund of selling off things we don't want anymore atva lower price but i think your idea is better and serves for a common good.

I see. I usually just give things away because it's a hassle selling around here..

Hey Kevin,

Often it's not the screen or the brightness or the radiation, it's finding frequency of rest.

Try this Eye Leo.

Thanks, nice tip!

no worries, yeah, eye strains are real and the accumulated impact unnoticable, apparently a small thing like looking away after every few minutes or longer makes a world of difference

I wish the site is https lol. A bit of a security freak here. Btw, I found f.lux which seems cool. But you were talking about "frequency of rest"..

No need for ssl, it's a known freeware, been around for a while

freq of rest is different for everyone, my rest includes closing my eyes and then looking at a faraway object preferably something naturally green like trees or something

for me it's minimum 1-2mins rest when the eyes don't feel tired (periodic interval set by the app and yourself - do experiment), when the eyes begin to feel tired, gotta take longer rest or best just take a break - get up, walk away, wash face, go drink water, etc

Thanks @dj123, this is why i'm going to change my workstation. Currently it's all sound-proofed and without windows because I was focusing on music back then. Don't need it now..

yeah, do give yourself a window, also sunlight at least 15 mins a day direct gets you your minimum vitamin D and reduces depression and other negative emotional state. gotta take care of yourself @kevinwong.

I guess it's the same as all of the bad habits we develop over time without even knowing what we're really doing to ourselves.

You are a perfect example of people’s everyday problems they can’t figure out what is causing them. It’s like in my profession. I work with electricity, and what happened to you is happening to me on a daily bases. At first I was really frustrated when I couldn’t find the cause of this particular problem, however I had always solved it. I look for every litle detail and eventually I always solve it, no matter what. The most important thing is to never give up and never panic, event if you have to look 100 time I guarantee you, eventually you will find it. Usually it is it, just like you mentioned “must be something blindingly obvious”

@kevinwong, it's good you discovered this on time. Some screen display are just so hazardous to health expecially to the eyes.
It's good to know you'll be dumping it for a better and more eye friendly display.

I myself have a terrible habit and I always pray I don't end up blind as I'm growing up.
My bad habit - I stare at my phone from morning till night. Please don't blame me. In an ever changing world, we want to catch the latest fad, know what's trending, know the latest headline, read the latest discovery in science and tech, health etc. we want to know how the crypto market is faring, what's dumping and what's pumping, trying to post on steemit and go through what others are posting, and a whole lot of other things. Oh! I forgot to add, watch videos too.

I know how terrible this is to my brain and eyes, but I can't help it - I wanna be successful, I gotta pack all the knowledge and I gotta put my legs in the right places - yeah, know where to invests for my future.

Oh my poor eyes, I'm so sorry. But daddy just gotta keep trying hard to become successful, so please bear with him.

Happy Steeming

Thanks @enolife. All the best in your endeavours! I'd personally cut down on news and getting to know what's up all the time in all places, but why not if you can deal with it ;) maybe I'm getting older! lol

OK. Good to know that. Whatever is best for you is fine

Well said. Lately I have been at the computer for long periods of time and it is making my eyes strained. A bigger problem was my posture. I couldn't believe how fucked up it was at my age. I have been going to the gym to specifically strengthen weak muscles due to sitting so often. It has been a miracle. I look and feel soooo much better now. No more forward head posture!

My display isn't as big as yours, but it is a Samsung laptop. I think being near a radiating display isn't good for you regardless of the size. Get outside and let your eyes take in some sun rays!

I'll likely reduce my desktop time to only a couple of hours a day now even if I'm at home! Maybe a projector to the wall is a better solution?

If you can actually follow through with it, then that would be great. The thing with me is that whenever I try to minimize my computer usage, I always end up needing to do something with a computer regardless. I'll say, "ok no more steemit and youtube. Let's do something new today" and then whatever new activity I can do also involves a computer. I always lose....=(

Best would be augmented reality displays..

Hey there

Stick 'blue block amber glasses' into amazon if it's your sleep/mood combo not being right.

These really helped for me when I'd sit 8 hours in front of 2 similar sized monitors.

Now I have a laptop and don't work for the big monitor guys so things are better, good luck!

Nice tip, looking into it!

A pleasure.

I'm thinking you aren't the only Steemian who could possibly do with a pair.

Also, night mode I think has been a great addition in this regard, but those are some statistics I can't pull from the Blockchain.

Good luck!

Huh what statistics from night mode do you mean? kinda confused :D

How night mode has improved the rest-time of Steemians - would be a nice case study for sure!

Did you order a pair of glasses? They are a bit Bono from U2, but who's worried about looking like a loaded rockstar? 😁
