Success is Plural - Success is not one goal, but many.

Success is not a one way street.

Success is a Mindset

Interpreted as a singularity with its own suggestion, the monolithic word Success should more aptly be applied as a plural rather than a singular, in that it is an equal opportunity endeavor. That is to say, the word is significant to some people as achieving an ultimate goal in:

  • Money

  • Fame

  • Life

  • Endurance

  • Health

  • Art

  • Family

  • Work

  • Friends

  • Invention

  • Others

Certainly there are persons who have obtained one, or even several, of the above...but not all of them. And no one has ever achieved them all at the same time. (And lived to tell us about it!)

Success is therefore a never ending quest for the ones that continue to be elusive. If and when that one is obtained, then it's on to the next, and the next, ad infinitum. There will never be a complete end to signify the totality of the word, success.

The proposition put forward here is to abandon the word ,Success in favor of the plural, Successes as a more realistic measurement of one's life goals, achievements, and accomplishments. Reasonable persons may choose to differ.

Good points @folke. For me, success is a journey not a destination. It's living my life as well-aligned with my purpose as I can, and feeling I'm doing the right thing(s). There are individual successes and failures along the way, but in general, knowing I'm on the right path and moving forward is my success.

Hi,

I know that Leanardo Davinci isn't still alive to tell us about it - bit he had a fair crack at all of the above.

I take your point and also that success is a moving target too.

Fabulous post ! This is exactly the sort of posts I am hoping for. People with varying points of view expressing their experiences, their thoughts, their opinions; all very valid! And I am hoping that as we all continue to explore and discuss the concept of success we will learn new things.

And, I want to say that I think you have hit on something that I too have been thinking about as we explore this topic. That is to say, can someone be "successful" in only one area from the list above and feel successful in general?

It brings up a discussion I had yesterday. The person I was talking to spoke of great success in the areas of career and finance but they don't feel successful as a family. Too much time away makes it really difficult to be a good parent and partner. So, is success more about a balance of successes in multiple parts of life? Or, as you suggest, a moving target that constantly evolves as we move through life?

You've given us a lot to think about! Thanks!

Also, another thing...

It would be great to know what brought you to this conclusion. Can you share more about your life experiences that brought you to this conclusion? I would be fascinated to learn more and I am sure others would too.
