I was at the store the other day and saw a bottle of Stone Lukcy Basartd and thought to myself, "I think I have a review and some photos of this beer and it would be perfect for Beer Saturday." Thus, this week for #BeerSaturday, a contest hosted by @detlev, I present a review of Stone Brewing's Lukcy Basartd.

Wait a minute, isn't the name of this beer misspelled? Yes it is. The effect that Stone Brewing is using for the name of this beer and the description is known as typoglycemia, the ability to read words where the letters are jumbled. There's an interesting article on Live Science about the phenomenon.

For teh saek of santiy I wlil not wirte my rveiew usnig typoglycemia. 😉

I first tried this beer back in 2011 about two months after it's launch in November 2010 and until recently I haven't seen it very often in the stores. It turns out Lukcy Basartd is only available every 2 years, or so. Searching around on the internet, now I'm not sure whether or not the bottle I saw was new, 2018 or late 2017, or just a left over supply from 2016. I'll keep search and report back.

Lukcy Basartd is an amalgamation of three beers, according to the Stone Brewing website:

Lukcy Basartd Ale was first released in November 2010 in celebration of the (lucky) 13th anniversary of Arrogant Bastard Ale. This powerfully complex beer is an amalgamation of three Bastards—Arrogant Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale and OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale — unceremoniously thrown together and then dry-hopped to excess, providing a fittingly immoderate blast of malty, hoppy flavor. Those Worthy souls who possess the nerve to try it will be rewarded with a delicious assault on their taste buds.

Appearance

Foamy, frothy egg-nog, manilla folder yellow, tan head, which is very long lasting and inviting. Hazy nearly opaque, brown-orange amber color.

Aroma

As soon as you start pouring this beer you can smell the wonderful aroma. Bouquet of citrus grapefruit and very ripe micans, fresh pine but not too resinous (like pine needles), floral like just a hint of jasmine, and a few herbal earthy tones. The bouquet is backed by an aroma of roasted barley malt and something toasty sweet like waffle cones.

Taste/Flavor

This beer is sweet and bitter. There is more bitterness than sweet and it has quite a bitter bite to it. The sweetness combined with the waffle cone or brown sugar aroma balances out this bitterness very well. The hops are a little spicy on the tongue a bit like black peppercorn. It has a roasty quality as well.

Mouthfeel

This is a medium-full bodied beer with a smooth texture and fine carbonation. It is not quite silky in texture. Combined with the texture and aroma, it has a creamy, like cream soda, feel too it.

Overall

I can have one, two, all the time or anytime. It might be a bit strong for two but it's so good, you'll want a second. It is a great beer any time of year.

Recommendation

Drink it!

Recommendations are on a 3 point scale: drink it, you decide, and don't drink it.

Thanks!

Last week I tried Stone IPA and it was great! I am sure this one is perfect too!

Yeah, I hope it comes back or is already back this year.

Damn. Now I want a beer.

Funny how that works isn't it. I wanted that beer while working on the post. Might be hard to find.

Very Lucky Indeed, CHEERS !

Brilliant what they have done with the name here... Very clever.. How strong are these bad boys? I liked your line 'For teh saek of santiy I wlil not wirte my rveiew usnig typoglycemia.' :o)

Given the three donor beers a pretty amazing it's not a shock that this is go too, it sounds amazing. I'd like to think it's fresh as Stone are very particular about that sort of thing.

It might've been on draft. It just bugs me that I can't remember where I saw it recently.
