Back2Basics, cold and flu season without medication just my ferments.

in #back2basics7 years ago

Bit of pressure on me today with the topic.
In Perth we are having a shocking cold and flu season. So I am trying not to use any meds this season. My wife is with me. This is proving difficult as our 2 year old is bringing home all sorts of bugs. She is not included in the experiment as what we are using she would not palate.
So what do we use? Fermented foods and vitamin C. Of course what else would we use. We have had some real bad nights this winter. One of the awesome foods we had was fermented garlic. Got some garlic 2 months back and fermented it in salt brine. There have been days where I will eat 1 clove raw in the morning and night. Really gives you the sweats. But you are better for it. Another great vitamin and probiotic booster was the juice from my sourkraut. Of course we have Beet Kvass everyday.

Now that stuff really stands you on your feet. When yo think the day is all too much and you are way too sick, a glass of that really helps. Made from red cabbage it has heaps of vitamin C in it and B's.
I must admit that panadol or any of they other meds only really masked the symptoms of cold and flu. These remedies really made a difference in how we felt rather quickly.
We are so surprised and a bit hooked. Nest year I will be trying the Master Tonic which is full on. Horseraddish, tumeric, ginger, chillies, onions in Apple Cider Vinegar fermented for several weeks.

Here are some of the ferments we tried this year. Kimchi, Kvass, different types of sauerkraut, salsa, garlic, onions, pears in honey, lemons in honey and so on. Plenty more to try with new seasons veg.

No way cold or flu germs are going to last at your place b2b. Probably keeps the nosey neighbours away too. ;) Great b2b post b2b. SK.

Thanks, worked bloody well. Next year got plans for more and different tonics.

We have just finished a batch of Fire Cider to keep our colds away, along with vitamin c. The stuff is amazing, but it sure is 'warming' as the name suggests.

Only just learned about fire cider. As soon as i find horseradish i am giving it a go.

It;s time for new medicine!

You know me, always trying to be different.

Cool info. I'd like to try doing this in prep to our cold season. 😉

Thanks,
an easy one is lemon slices in a jar covered in raw honey. Let sit for a few days and then in the fridge. Tastes good.

Thanks for this @back2basics. How long do these concoctions normally last?

Hi, when done properly 1 year. Trick with them is to refrigerate once they are done fermenting. When fermenting vege keep everything under the brine and you will be fine. But you have to keep an eye on them to make sure they do not get white webs that are the yeast. They are ok but it forms a layer out of the brine which mold could form.

Thanks for the info. We'll give this a try, especially hubby, he loves anything natural. :)

I'm sure you do. :-)

Excellent idea to try. We are far to quick to turn to the pharmacy these days at the first sight of a sniffle. This sounds much better for you. I do think there may be some trial and error involved to find what works for you but I'm sure it's more effective in the long term.

I was shocked at how well it worked. No days off work, even though some nights I thought I was going to die. Thanks for the comments.

I'm so glad you've grabbed hold of the b2b challenge with both hands!

Thanks could not let this challenge go without posting.haha.

All the natural medicines we have keep us fit. It's so hard to beat the flu especially when kids are involved!

Great post @back2basics. Love that you are trying to go without pharmaceuticals. The longer you go without, the stronger your immunity will become and the less you will need them in the future

Trying. Also started the activated charcoal drink you wrote about. Whys do you add salt?

Not a single cold or flu for me here this winter since my healthy lifestyle changes last year. Probably a first for me I think.
