RE: Reaching for the End

Beautifully executed, beautiful painting! Without white I wonder what was the light tone you've used here? In my experience I've actually never not had white on my pallet. Perhaps I'll have to give this a try!

Oh, I did use white, I'm just not counting it in the colours. In painting you do not count white as a colour because it is used purely for mixing and never pure itself, that is if you follow the classical methods of painting.

Oh I see, I thought that you meant you excluded white from your pallet and so when I was studying your piece I thought perhaps you used a very pale yellow. But I understand I don't list white as a color either, for example, if I do a triad I refer to it as 3 colors plus white. Lately I've only been using grumbacher red, phthalo blue, cadmium yellow & of course white.

Here's the color I thought you might have used if had excluded white. I may still try a piece without white.

You could exclude white depending upon the palette and final colour theme you desired. I never paint pure white onto a painting, unless I was using as an underpainting that I would later glaze. With this approach you can achieve a brilliance of colour that could never achieve out of the tube or mixed.
