Hello in MARCH! 🌱🌿

Every month I design a calendar with my illustrations. For March, I painted an imaginary tree in watercolours to emphasise the arrival of spring.

Of course, in Latvia, it’s nowhere near the feeling of spring. This month starts with minus 17 degrees and for me - a bad cold and fever. Therefore, a hopeful, bright version of a thriving tree seems just about right at the moment.

I couldn’t get out of bed for a long while today, but I wanted to paint and saw it as a duty to create a calendar for this month, so I got all my strength to sit down and paint. And painting gives me strength in return. Somehow I’ve always thought that making art is healing me.

There was no particular reference photo, I just looked through a bunch of google images to remind me of how.. trees look like. I know, it’s funny. But I often scour the internet before painting something - either I pick a reference photo or just scroll through the pictures to ‘plant’ the image of an object in my memory, so to better understand the peculiarities of light and shadow.

The palette

I created the illusion of depth by layering colours - I painted YELLOW for the top of the tree where the sunlight hits the leaves. VIRIDIAN in the midtones and PURPLE in the shadows that ultimately gives the depth to the tree.
