There Is Nothing Wrong With Child Labor

in #anthropology6 years ago

My fondest childhood memories where not about playing games or having fun with friends. They where about work. This might sound scary or even plain abusive for most western folk but it wasn't that bad. The reality is that most people on earth need to work from a very young age if they are to survive. And there is nothing wrong about this.

The idea of a child working and not enjoying themselves has been romanticized to summon terror in our minds. Ironically, the reason for this is because we came to believe as a society that women and children are feeble entities that should have our care and attention. In other words, the idea that grown up men are mentally stronger and more capable to take work on a physical and mental level is what created this false belief.

Children, by nature, are extremely adaptable. They can be molded into almost anything their environment brings them. This is by design how evolution works. A young life inside a novel ecosystem will adopt much faster and way more efficient than one that has been molded into a paradigm and then asked to change all over again. This is also one of the reasons children are more resilient allergy wise and even infection wise if they are exposed to the elements at a young age.

A young child growing up in an environment where they have to work to sustain themselves teaches them fundamental truths about how the world actually works. For example, it teaches that the world needs services and things that others desire. In our modern western world, children are brought up with all the amenities and taught, like in their childhood play life, they can become anything they want when they grow up. The world, somehow, will learn to cater to their own desires.

Tragically, this mentality had led to the campus monstrosities we see in academia (fantasy camping 2.0) where young people believe that they are entitled to things even if they don't deserve them. Their existence and dreams are sufficient for the nanny state (their new parent) spoiling them all over again. And this is really the issue in regards to how everything works. They never get to grow up. And if they can have everything by a democratic vote, why should they? The abstract "others" should and have to take care of them.

Working the shittiest of jobs at a young age only brings responsibility and harsh realizations that one has to face if they are to make it in life. The choices that are going to be made in their near future will be far more accurate. One will already have skin in the game instead of theorizing how the world should or could be. And this is really the main issue with most kids that have never gotten their hands and hearts dirty with the world. They live behind a screen with a fresh meal served to them on a daily basis, all the gadgets at their hearts desire and then they demand to have an opinion and vote about how the world works. "Darn Capitalists, they should share the wealth" right? Complaining and nagging is what represents their entire persona. Action and initiative is the least you can expect from them. This is, coincidentally, how children act as well.

Ideally, it would be nice if the world functioned on some kind of robotic utopia where everything and everyone is protected, finances are a non issue and everyone lives their dream. This is not happening, not anytime soon, not ever. We have been automating work and services for more than a century now and all that we learned was that our struggles have shifted from our limps to our minds. We are drowned in existential crisis because we can't figure out how to utilize the meat and bones nature has burden us with. We immobilize ourselves in front of a screen and then like lab hamsters go into another room to exercise doing pointless and repetitive movements for the sake of keeping us healthy and not dying. Contrary to common belief, we are not the smartest of all animals. We are simply the ones that have mastered the art of fooling our own minds.

We call this progress because it gives us the chance to reflect upon our false ego. It gives us the chance to create personas in an imaginary world where anyone can be anyone else. We create bullshit jobs to push papers around and we have convinced ourselves that this is real work. And for god's sake we would never let a child go through this. Because a child's job is to play, much like what we wish to do when we grow up. We play, and we let other people's children in far away lands to create the things that allows us to be children.

Children shouldn't be playing their entire childhood, but children also should not be forced into labor in order to provide for themselves/their families. Children first and for all should be Educated. As you mentioned in your article, children are the most adaptable during the early years, so why would you put them in a mind-numbing job in stead of class where they can become critical thinking students? You refer to the childhood as playtime getting everything they desire without ever understanding how the real world works, but I think you are just referring bad parenting.

I believe Education is the key for creating well aware, conscience people, and having a job at a young age can only be more beneficial. I myself didn't get everything I wanted so if there was something I desired, I had to work to earn it. But putting children into full-time labor seems to me like a bad idea.

I think the problem is the terminology. When most people hear the word "child labor" the image that comes up first is most likely the photo used at the beginning of this post. When actually it would definitely give children the gumption they need in the world now. But instead they'd rather become YouTube creators.
I have a 12-year old student here in South Korea who wants to be a diplomat. She has proficiency in Japanese, English, and Chinese, she holds a computer certificate, she can even explain the ancient Korean dynasties in English!! I once suggested that she get some work experience now while she is young, so when she gets older she'll have some skin in the game instead of just a polished academia. Can't remember her response exactly but it was along the lines of 'no.'

However it might take physical manifestation, children have to grow up fast this next generation.
We have not done them many favors.

Well depending on one's intelligence and specific experiences children can get very different and quite limited ideas about how the world works that may hinder them in the subsequent career especially if they start with menial jobs .Working full time prevents many people of developing a well rounded philosophy.I am not against someone putting his child to work just a bit to see 'how real life works' but forcing him to work full time for extended periods may fuck him up.By far the most successful people that i know are people coming from rich ,nurturing families where they never had to work. Most of these people have been able to keep their lifestyle and have some of the highest paying jobs while they are still 'playing' during work.

Philosophy was for privileged Greeks sitting in the coffee town pretending to do fair politics while women and slaves had them as kings. Life is pretty simple and doesn't need philosophy or thinking too much about how things are.

The rich people you refer about stay rich as a result of privilege not because of play. Its pretty darn obvious that if a family has money it also has connections and just by leaving the money in trust funds you can multiply it without effort. Connections will get you all you need. So what you refer to as success is just inheritance going down the line.

Life is as simple as you can make it.Having a full time menial job during childhood may hinder one at a later part of his life especially if he wants to go to more intellectual jobs.
Many of the (relatively) rich people that i know are probably out of reach of the influence of their families. In my opinion one of the main advantages such people have is that their environment partly helps them develop intellectual habits and behaviors that could aid them anywhere they go.Some of them are at top jobs in UK are on their way of becoming richer than their families.I will say that its mainly the least able tend to come back and make more standard and extensive use of their families' connections for their success

Funny @periplokos and @kyriakos talking about Greek philosophy :-)

this is the big reality of our societies. every country play a role to solve child labor issue.

At least it is not allowing children to beg on street and making them capable of self dependency rather to be dependent on other for survival....pretty interesting ans nice post 👍

Oh yeah, the good'ol days. Chores, Errands,Working to pay for your wants... and real jobs that helped someone else. These were the realities of being a part of the family as well as the community.

'Working the shittiest of jobs at a young age only brings responsibility and harsh realizations that one has to face if they are to make it in life.'

I could not agree more.

Yes if it is a work not slavery

Having been in some countries of the so-called Third World, I could see little kids running a shop, repairing cars or taking care of a herd of cows. Wow, I compared them to our often spoiled kids in the Western world. On the other hand, childhood is playhood, as Roald Dahl used to say. If you want to get a glance of the paradise, look at children happily playing about. Children are very serious when playing. It is real, it has meaning. I guess the truth lies between "Working the shittiest of jobs at a young age" and unconditioned time for playing and dreaming.
