Classical bystander effect:
"The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. Several factors contribute to the bystander effect, including ambiguity, cohesiveness and diffusion of responsibility. "
I've seen many research on this. I've found that being pressed for time was one reason. The experiment was to make someone give a speech in a college and on the way he/she meets a person who was beaten up. The topic of the speech didn't change the behavior. But those who had less time left till the speech tend to help that beaten person less.
When helping a person, people start thinking about how much of their time would be taken for this.
I saw many videos like this one but
It's interesting to when one of the people of the crowds starts helping ,it's like people start to wake up from their trance and starts finally acting.
People probably figure there is strength in numbers. Anytime someone intervenes there is always that chance in the back of their minds that the perpetrator(s) are still close at hand. It's not uncommon at all to read about people who stop to help someone and end up dead themselves. There were a couple stories like that last year that made national headlines here in the US.
