Review: Youth & Consequences on YouTube Red
YouTube Red has released a new series on their subscribtion service they call YouTube Red. One of the shows you get as a subscriber to YouTube Red is Youth & Consequences starring popular YouTuber Anna Akana.
Anna Akana plays powerful trendsetter Farrah Cutney, the queen of Central Rochester High. But as her rivals rise, Farrah learns that the only thing harder than obtaining absolute power is keeping it.
At first glance, one might think it's a modern-day take on Mean Girls, but once you watch it you quickly realize it's so much more. Her character isn't a bully, she actually uses her popularity in a way that manipulates people and situations that benefit the greater good.
In the first season, there are a total of 8 episodes. It's unclear if there will be a second season. Youtube Red isn't really good at communicating with fans regarding these things.
The story itself takes place in high school, although it's obvious the characters are all well beyond the age of being in high school. Still, that's pretty common for Hollywood. I mean at least it's not as bad as Andrea Zuckerman from 90210 or Rizzo from Grease.
Anna Akana is a social media powerhouse with a legion of fans and she even has some real world acting experience. That combined with a great script and you've got one heck of a show - far superior to what I was honestly expecting.
I grew up with 90210, the original - not the horrific reboot, and I didn't think any other show set in the same type of place could live up. I was wrong. Youth and Consequences did just that and then some.
It's so easy to want to call it a modern-day Mean Girls but she isn't a Regina George, the icy blonde bitch from the 2004 movie. Yes you'll get that vibe at first, but as the show goes on you'll begin to see a character that has so many layers, you'll start to really fall in love with her even more.
I don't know if I would go as far to say you should subscribe to YouTube Red just to see this series, but I will say this, if you have the 2-week free trial on your account, use it and watch this show. Totally worth it!
