Kashgar is a city in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, in China’s far west. It was a stop on the Silk Road, with its history stretching over 2,000 years. Today it’s known for the Kashgar Sunday Bazaar, a daily market crammed with pashminas, spices, fur caps and more. Another major site is the 15th-century Idkah Mosque, which can house up to 20,000 worshipers.
Stopping here for a decent amount of time is well worth it to take in the beauty of the teal colored water and dunes in the distance. White Sand Lake is also a good spot for souvenir shopping as Kyrgyz traders sell local trinkets – mostly stones – to travelers.
The Silk Way Rally is an annual rally raid type of off-road race. This desert called Taklimakan. Taklimakan is a great desert of Central Asia and one of the largest sandy deserts in the world. The Takilmakan occupies the central part of the Tarim Basin in the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, northwestern China.
