WWOOF
What is WWOOF?
WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms, or Willing Workers On Organic Farms. However, it used to stand for Working Weekends On Organic Farms but this changed when it was realized that people want to volunteer and host every day, not just weekends.
World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms is a hospitality service which is made up of hosts, the people who own the farm, and woofers, the workers!
The organic farms for operated by a loose network of national organizations that do homestays on their organic farms. They want you to work a decided amount of days on their farms in exchange for their generous hospitality. The will provide you with food and a safe place to sleep.
WWOOFing was born in 1971 and the organization only grew stronger. The inventor of WWOOF is Sue Coppard. She is a British citizen, she makes a habit of escaping at weekends in the countryside and loves to work on farms in exchange for a place to sleep and something to eat.
Foundations
The 3 Pillars of WWOOFing are based on moral values:
Trust, tolerance and generosity,
The exchanges between the host and the WWOOFeur must be done in the exclusion of any subordination link. They are done in the respect of moral values,
The graceful welcome, shelter and covered, is not subject to any promise of any counterpart. There is only one condition, namely that the WWOOFeur must express the sincere wish to discover the life and work of his host.
Goals
Allow everyone to learn the techniques of organic farming, biodynamics, permaculture ...
To provide city dwellers with an experience in the life and functioning of farms
Experiment with other healthy, alternative foods
Having more information, understanding the biological movement and participating in its development
Giving the confidence to move towards a self-sufficient lifestyle
Visit the area where you are and integrate into the local life
Get to know people who want to share their knowledge and their daily lives.
I always wanted to WWOOF when I was younger! Been thinking about opening our farm up for volunteers.
My wife and I may be heading wwoofing soon! I love the three pillars it's based on.
