WWE Clash of Champions: Preview, predictions and more
WWE Clash of Champions is just 1 day away, and oh boy, it is an interesting PPV. I will go through all the matches in detail, cover the build-up and give my opinions and my predictions. Let's go.
Drew Gulak (c) vs. Humberto Carrillo vs. Lince Dorado for the Cruiserweight Championship
This match will probably be on the pre-show. I don't normally watch the pre-show, but I think I will this time, because this seems like a really good match. I don't watch 205 Live, so I can't tell you about the build-up, but considering what I've read, I predict Drew Gulak to win and retain the Cruiserweight title. I think that's what should happen, too, since if the rumors are true, and 205 Live is gonna get canceled, Drew is a good person to take the Cruiserweight Championship to NXT.
Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman (c) vs. Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler for the Raw Tag Team Championships
This match is part of Seth and Braun's current feud. They are defending the Raw Tag titles here, but fighting each other for the Universal Championship later on in the show. Will they co-exist? Will they be able to work together? Well, actually, it's not that simple of a question. You might be able to argue that it would be better for the storyline if Seth and Braun retained, because that adds extra tension to their Universal title match, as they will still have to defend the tag titles afterwards. Still, I predict Roodolph to win here after a mistake by Seth, because I think they want to add animosity to the main event more than tension, which is completely fine. I believe Roode and Ziggler should win, as well, but man, why do we have a thrown-together tag team fighting a thrown-together tag team? It also makes no sense, storyline wise. Why would Roode and Ziggler have an advantage over Rollins and Strowman if they've been a tag team for even less than the champs? Weird.
Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross (c) vs. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville for the Women's Tag Team Championships
This match has all the heat of an iceberg in the absolute zero.
Mandy: "You're ugly, Nikki!"
Nikki: "I'll beat you up!"
Nikki: beats Mandy up
Excellence!
But seriously, this feud is pretty lame, and is only there to carry Nikki and Alexa on to their next feud. I doubt they'll have a match at Hell in a Cell, simply because it's not necessary, and really, I have no idea what they will do at Survivor Series. Anyways, pretty predictable, Alexa and Nikki will retain. What's interesting is when they'll pull the trigger on the Nikki face turn. I guess they're eyeing on a WrestleMania match, and we'll just have to wait and see.
The New Day (Big E and Xavier Woods) (c) vs. The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships
This match had almost literally no build. Yes, The Revival and Randy Orton beat The New Day up on Raw, but the focus was always on Kofi and Randy, not on the tag teams. Because of this, it's not that easy to predict, but I think WWE will wait for a match with some actual build for a title change (and that's good), so I predict Big E and Xavier to retain.
AJ Styles (c) vs. Cedric Alexander for the United States Championship
This match has been building up for a couple of weeks, but was only made official after Cedric pinned Styles at the end of Raw in the 10-man tag team match. This could be a great match, and I'll be surprised if it's anything less than good. I think they want to wait on a Cedric title run, so Styles retaining is my pick. I also hope there will be no shenanigans, just to show how these are two incredible athletes.
Roman Reigns vs. Erick Rowan, No Disqualifications
This is a very interesting match. It will be the first PPV match in the Roman Reigns whodunit storyline, and the last two episodes of SmackDown have turned this angle from a weird and confusing one into a very interesting one.
Two weeks ago on SmackDown, Rowan beat Roman Reigns up and revealed the it was actually him, on his own, behind the attacks, and that Daniel Bryan was not actually involved. He said that he will no longer be anyone's puppet. He then continued to assault Roman, hitting him with the steel steps. When Bryan tried to talk some sense to him and slapped him in the face, Rowan Iron Clawed him through the announce table, and the show faded to black.
A week later, Roman and Rowan had a wild and fun brawl, in which Rowan took a fan (a plant, of course) and powerbombed him onto Reigns and a bunch of security guys. The brawl ended with Rowan shoving a camera jib in Roman Reigns's face and standing tall over everyone.
While they still could pull the "it was all a rouse, Bryan was behind this all along" shtick, I don't think they will. I think WWE are trying to push Erick Rowan as a singles competitor, and what's a better way to do it, what's a better way to show how much of a monster he is, then by having him beat Roman Reigns clean? You might call me crazy, but that's my prediction. Rowan beating Reigns after a chaotic brawl. I'm really pumped for this match, I have to say.
Also, if Bryan was actually behind this all along, then I still get the prediction right, so... Strategy, I guess.
Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship
This will be Nakamura's first PPV match since aligning with Sami Zayn. Frankly, Sami is amazing so far in his role. He's just soooo annoying, in a good way, of course. I see this partnership going very well until WrestleMania, when they'll probably have the blow-off match.
The Internet's biggest fear is that WWE will have Miz win just to stick it to Jericho, and while Miz will probably break Chris's record eventually, I choose to trust WWE to not make that stupid decision. I predict Nakamura to win.
Becky Lynch (c) vs. Sasha Banks for the Raw Women's Championship
This match and the other women's match are basically part of the same storyline. The only good thing to come from the Wild-Card rule, it has allowed everything to fall in place to form this wonder of a storyline.
Sasha Banks returned on Raw and beat up Natalya and Becky Lynch with a chair, then challenged Becky a week later to a match at Clash of Champions, a challenge which was expected. Then, 7 days later, Bayley shocked the world by turning heel, attacking Becky Lynch with a chair after she seemed to stop Sasha from doing so. Charlotte, meanwhile, already had her match against Bayley at COC set. On SmackDown, Bayley cut a great promo about her attack on Lynch, saying she's still the role model she always was, and that she just wanted to show the kids what loyalty means. She was then interrupted by Charlotte Flair, who basically confirmed to us that she's still a heel, but at least not a pretentious one ("What you see is what you get!"). After that, Bayley and Sasha beat Charlotte up with a steel chair.
Finally, last week on Raw, Bayley and Sasha faced off against the unlikely duo of Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch in an awesome match that showcased just how talented these four women are. Charlotte and Becky won with Charlotte pinning Bayley for the win.
I cannot wait to see how this storyline progresses. It is just so well-done so far. Anyways, I predict Sasha to beat Becky and win the title, which relates to the other women's match. Speaking of...
Bayley (c) vs. Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women's Championship
Nothing more to add, I already detailed everything above. I predict Bayley to retain, thus establishing Bayley and Sasha as the most powerful women's duo in WWE. What's interesting is what they're going to do at Survivor Series. If, indeed, Bayley and Sasha come out of this match as champions they will have to face each other at SS in a champion vs champion match. They will probably find a way out of it, however, since it's too soon for their break-up. Maybe they'll even pull the Fatal 4-Way at Survivor Series, who knows. We'll just have to wait and see.
Kofi Kingston (c) vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship
This match has had a damn good build-up. They just kept it consistent every week, making this match feel like the big deal that it is. They even let Randy drop an S bomb on SmackDown! Anyways, I'm very excited for this match, and we'll probably see many, many shenanigans, possibly a ref bump to change the match into a brawl, which would be very fun. I predict Kofi to retain here, and after the match, The New Day will probably come down to the ring and stand tall with aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the gold.
Seth Rollins (c) vs. Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship
There it is. The match that will almost certainly be the main event, and for good reason. This match has had a really interesting build, and I'm very curious as to what will happen here. They'll probably have a very good match, but I don't think they're gonna have Braun win it just yet. In fact, my prediction is very, very risky. My prediction is: A no contest.
Yup, you heard me right. I predict the match will end in a no contest, after interference from either Brock Lesnar or The Fiend, probably The Fiend, since he doesn't have a match on this show, and it will be a very impactful (even if a little predictable) ending to the match.
So here are my predictions:
-Drew Gulak to beat Humberto Carrillo and Lince Dorado
-Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler to beat Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman
-Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross to beat Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville
-The New Day to beat The Revival
-AJ Styles to beat Cedric Alexander
-Erick Rowan to beat Roman Reigns
-Shinsuke Nakamura to beat The Miz
-Sasha Banks to beat Becky Lynch
-Bayley to beat Cherlotte Flair
-Kofi Kingston to beat Randy Orton
-Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman to fight to a no contest
Overall Thoughts
I think Clash of Champions could be a great show if executed well, and it has the potential to really be special. I'm very excited, and I hope you are, too. May good be unto WWE.
