In Detroit, the Civil Rights Movements was a great time in the Art World for African American writers, who were writing poetry reflecting the complex issues in African American political and cultural life, from World War 1 to the 21st century. Excellent creative writings in many forms were written: "revolutionary manifestos, humorist toast, love songs and yearning for freedom,"- from Dr.Gloria House text in the Detroit Public Library 2015 African American Booklist, Legacy of Dudley Randall is referenced linking to a beautiful PDF on Broadside Lotus Press on Wikipedia

These poets created an open door for publishing some of the greatest poets in African American History that we know today, including Gwendolin Brooks, who won a Pulitzer prize for her poetry, Niki Giovani, Sonia Sanchez, Langston Huges, Aurora Harris, Etheridge Knight amongst many other great poet and activist.
