Three misconceptions about success

There are several misconceptions about success but I shall be dealing mainly on the following three

  • Opportunity
  • Hard work
  • Connection

Opportunity

Many people grumbled about how they're not successful because of lack of opportunities. The sad truth is opportunity doesn't guarantee success. Although it's a fact that most successful people today only needed just one opportunity to become who they're today. People who do nothing than wait for an opportunity won't be ready to capitalise on it when it does comes.

"When opportunity comes, it's too late to prepare" - John Wooden

Success happens when opportunity meets preparation.

Hard work

This is the most believed misconception about success. Hard work and success are like two relatives. Strongly correlated, no doubt but you can't equate them. There's this feeling about working hard and producing results that's feels like success on it's own. Seeing hard work as success is superficial. Success may not come to those who don't work hard, but hard work and success isn't the same.

Intelligence + Hard work + Work smart = Success

I'm not trying to be religious here but prayer is another key factor to success; feel free to add it to the equation.

Connection

In a control like ours ( Nigeria) where nepotism is practised, people have often linked success to the people you know. Being born into the right family, having a godfather or friends who can Link them up. No doubt knowing influential people has it's own benefits; but connection alone will neither improve the life of someone who is off track nor guarantee success. In Nigeria today, it's a common believe most especially among students that your certificate without connection is useless! Can we also say those who had these connections backed up with their certificates are all successful? If you have nothing to offer in the first place your certificate plus your connection won't amount to nothing.

Conclusion

  • Successful people make right decisions early and manage those decisions daily.
  • Success is subjective.
