“I have it! I have it!” shouted Richter as he burst into the conference room.
“What, Herr Richter?”
“The X-ray diffraction! We can finally replicate it!”
“Why would we want to replicate X-ray diffraction?”
“Nein, nein! Not the diffraction. The crystal! We can finally duplicate the crystal.”
“What crystal, Herr Doctor?
“The capstone! As I suspected, it is quartz. But quartz is always a hexagonal prism ending in a hexagonal pyramid. So the mystery was, if quartz crystals always have six sides, how did the ancients build four-sided crystals? And now we know!”
“But we have the original capstone.”
“Yes. But we are missing 13 of the other crystals we need, according to the texts. None of them are in the inventory, and none of them have been found either. They are probably among those destroyed after the last Cosmic War. But now, with the structure of the artificial quartz revealed by the x-ray crystallography, we have extrapolated the scalar signature of the molecular arrangement. This we can program into Die Glocke Mark IV to generate those scalars and engineer a duplicate of the crystal. If that works, we do the same for the missing crystals!” he plopped his hands proudly on the front of his thighs to punctuate his confidence.
“Marvelous, Herr Doctor! But how will you know the scalars needed for the other crystals.”
“They’re in texts,” he answered smiling and practically squealing with joy.
The entire company stood up and congratulated him.
“Can you have them ready for our New Year’s Eve opening next year?”
Still beaming and squealing he stated, “Yes.”
Excited murmuring broke out among the men.
“Waste no more time, Herr Richter. Get right on it. We have to stay ahead of Faro and his friends, who are probably devoting every spare minute to finding ways to foil us.”
“I couldn’t be happier to oblige. This will be even greater than my grandfather’s accomplishments.” He spun on his heel and began to leave, then turned back.
“One more thing. We had the, uh, unfortunate loss of a few of our translators and our X-ray crystallography technician due to an over exposure. I’ll submit my requests for replacements at the end of the day. Perhaps, ah, Mr. Silva, can be enlisted for their ‘recruitment.’”
“Of course, Herr Doctor. Whatever you need.”
“Danke.”
