Language Rubicon #1: Ephemeral & Novelty
Language is the vessel in which we communicate ideas to one another. If an idea can be ‘languaged’, then it can be spoken and understood. I wish to impart upon you my knowledge and joy for language and hope you can enhance your understanding of reality.
Today I wish to focus and express understanding of the follow words: Ephemeral & Novelty
Ephemeral is a lovely word. It’s a ghostly apparition that flows easily down the tongue. Objects that are ‘ephemeral’ contain the aspect of short-lived time frames. Ephemeral is a great descriptive word for expressing time in a simple manner. Depending on context, ephemeral can be used in association with almost any object; Depending on the perspective, almost anything can be considered ephemeral. Ephemeral adds a slight philosophical touch to the atmosphere it’s used in and commands respect. I really enjoy this word!
Example Sentences
Life is ephemeral
Within a far-back perspective, our human lives are relatively short and pass us by quite quickly. Ephemeral indirectly expresses the quickness of an action or event.
Ephemerality of the seasons
Understand this passage as: the awareness of the seasons being ephemeral. Ephemerality is a noun, used often as “(the) ephemerality of (X)”.
Some further thoughts on ‘Ephemeral’
There is no ‘-ic’ add-on, but there is a usage of ‘-ity’
Synonyms (similar expressions): transient, short, brief, fleeting, flitting, momentary, evanescent, impermanent, fugacious.
Antonyms (opposite expressions): enduring, persistence,
Novelty is the idea of newness, of something fresh, unusual and not before seen. You can associate it with Originality as well. Novelty is the opposite of Nostalgia, however we may eventually feel ‘nostalgic’ for something that was once ‘novel’ or ‘original’; funny how that works :D. Novelties are also small trinkets you might buy at a “novelty store”. Such stores and objects are a bit old-fashioned and there’s better words to use for them, as such objects are not always new and unique.
Example Sentences
This car is amazing, I can’t believe what it can do; what a novel.
By describing something and expressing your astonishment towards it, you end by saying ‘how novel’ or ‘quite a novel’. Discover yourself that by replacing it with ‘original’ you express the same idea.
Synonyms (similar expressions): newness, curiosity, innovation, originality, fresh, marvel, rarity, oddity
Antonyms (opposite expressions): banal, fixity, invariable, permanence, persistence, uniformity
