A Message From The Dead - Snark's Dungeon Master Fantasy Stash
(This scenario is designed to serve as a plot hook for a larger adventure.)
It all began with a dream and a face you hadn't seen in ages.
A student of spellcraft a shade too dark for your taste, Istrate is - was? - an old flame of yours you haven't seen in years. Using magic too obscure for you to grasp, she came to your dreams to deliver one last, grim message:
"By the time you see this, I'm probably dead, or, gods forbid, worse. You have to come to Rabastet. Even if I don't make it, there are others. What they're doing to us here... it's inhuman. They world has to know. You're the only one I can trust."
Knowing Istrate's sensibilities - and lack thereof - you can't even begin to imagine what would shake her so badly as to send a message such as this.
Asking around, you learn that the place Istrate mentioned - Rabastet - is a some kind of secluded island city famous for its wealth and riches, a popular immigrant destination.
Apparently, there's a single ship that makes the long voyage to Rabastet - the Diligente. It has been ferrying hundreds of people there, making a killing off outrageously expensive fares.
Curiously enough, however, none seem to have come back.
What in the world happens over there?
