Haiku Poems: Perfect for a Content-hyper Digital World!
I wrote a haiku poem during my freshman year of college at Clemson University. My professor loved it so much that she encouraged me to publish it. I didn't publish it, but I changed my major to English, lol. Haiku poems originate in Japan and have 17 syllables. This was my poem:
hot piece of pizza
sinned with Italian spice
bitten with temptation
Today I am confused because my research revealed that Haiku poems are supposed to be 5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the second line and another 5 syllables on the third line. My poem is 17 syllables but in 5-6-6, not 5-7-5 order. Hmmm... (scratching my head). Eventually, my research led me to a few 5-6-6 poems. Reportedly, the 5-7-5 order works better with the Japanese language. As a result, it's optional to do a 5-6-6 poem in English language. Twenty years after graduating college, I am going to challenge myself to write a 5-7-5 haiku. Join me in the challenge if you wish and share your own haiku!
